We present a case of a gentleman in his 70s with extensive subcutaneous emphysema. Usually self-limiting, subcutaneous emphysema around the thoracic inlet can rarely lead to airway and cardiovascular compromise by compression of structures in the neck. This patient presented with a large pneumothorax on a background of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This was initially treated with an intrapleural chest drain. However, after removal of this drain, the patient developed subcutaneous emphysema and later signs of tension pneumothorax. Further intrapleural chest drains were required. One of these chest drains produced a broncho-subcutaneous fistula, which contributed to extensive subcutaneous emphysema. He developed symptoms of dysphonia and dysphagia. A subcutaneous drain was inserted for palliation of his symptoms and to improve his quality of life. His symptoms improved significantly after insertion of this subcutaneous drain. There are only a handful of case reports published on interventions to relieve subcutaneous emphysema.

Pneumomediastinum refers to the accumulation of air in the mediastinum, which may occur due to trauma, esophageal perforation, or spontaneously. Although rare, dental procedures, especially those involving air turbine drills, can cause mediastinal emphysema. Most reported cases are related to tooth extraction; however, nonextraction procedures may also be associated with this complication.

Tracheal injury during intubation is an uncommon condition in pediatric patients with a high mortality rate. There is no definitive consensus on the management of pediatric postintubation tracheal injury; most studies report satisfactory conservative treatment. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) with bedside subcutaneous drainage using a butterfly needle may be useful for conservative treatment in this group.

Background/aim: Endotracheal tube intubation is required for surgery under inhalation anesthesia. In the present study, after inhalation anesthesia in dogs, the tracheal tube was extubated without deflating the endotracheal tube cuff, resulting in thoracic tracheal rupture, subcutaneous emphysema, and pneumomediastinum. The ruptured thoracic trachea was reconstructed using an endotracheal stent to treat intrathoracic emphysema.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a rare, self-limiting condition that can be complicated by pneumothorax, pneumopericardium, and subcutaneous emphysema. This case describes a 25-year-old man with a chronic marijuana use history who developed SPM after a recent respiratory infection. Imaging showed significant pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium, and small pneumothoraces bilaterally.

Ocular complications associated with dental procedures are diverse but have been primarily reported through case reports and series, with no comprehensive reviews to date. The underlying mechanisms of these complications are often poorly understood by medical professionals, partly due to limited interdisciplinary education. This review aims to bridge this gap by summarizing the relevant anatomical connections between the oral and ocular regions, exploring the mechanisms through which dental procedures may lead to ophthalmic complications, and detailing their clinical presentations, progression, and potential management and preventive strategies.
