This paper describes the perception of intervocalic stop voicing in European Portuguese (EP) stimuli without a stop burst, when varying three acoustic cues: Vowel duration, stop duration, and voicing maintenance during stop closure. Perceptual stimuli were generated using biomechanical modeling. First, a discrimination experiment was conducted to determine the listeners' perceptual sensitivity to the voicing maintenance cue. Second, an identification experiment was conducted to examine the effect and interaction of vowel duration, stop duration, and voicing maintenance during stop closure on the voiced/voiceless identification responses of EP listeners. The results of the discrimination test show that voicing maintenance differences have a significant effect as soon as they exceed a certain threshold. In the identification experiment, evidence was found that only the two factors vowel duration and voicing maintenance significantly influence the listeners' decisions, but not stop duration. The ratio between stop duration and vowel duration plays a major role in distinguishing stop voicing, but only for highly devoiced stimuli. It is shown that in stimuli without a stop burst, both voicing maintenance, as a major but not required cue, and vowel duration are important acoustic cues for stop voicing distinctions in EP.

A longitudinal study was conducted over 5 months on 22 primary school teachers without existing vocal disorders to assess the effectiveness of a 1-day preventive voice intervention in limiting vocal deterioration over the school year, improving vocal endurance throughout a workday, and promoting the adoption and maintenance of healthy vocal habits. A combined analysis of the variation of objective acoustic parameters [f, Jitter, Shimmer, and harmonic to noise ratio (HNR)] throughout a workday showed that the intervention group (TEST) maintained a typical endurance profile across the school year, while the control group (CTRL) exhibited increased atypical vocal responses. Subjective assessments further supported the preventive impact, with the TEST group reporting reduced vocal discomfort and communication difficulties immediately after the intervention.

Background: People with laryngectomy who use a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis for communication experience changes to respiratory function resulting in reduced breath support and increased secretions. This impacts tracheoesophageal voice quality and volume. Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is an effective treatment for cough management, voice and respiratory function in other clinical populations, such as neurodegenerative conditions and benign voice disorders.

Objectives: Recent studies have suggested that tissue stem cells reside within the anterior and posterior maculae flavae of the human vocal fold mucosa. This study aimed to investigate the oxygen microenvironment of the maculae flavae as a stem cell niche and its potential role in regulating cellular metabolism and maintaining stem cell properties.

A common characteristic of women with eating disorders is a lack of embodiment and disconnection from the body. Increasing positive embodiment may be a means to help support recovery.
