The aim of the study was to determine if horses with large colon impaction were more severely affected by oral pathology than control cases and to relate faecal particle size distribution to dental pathology in both study groups. A prospective study included 39 horses with large colon impaction and 72 control horses from a hospital-based population. An oral pathology score (OPscore) and periodontal disease index (PDI) were assigned to all horses and faecal samples were collected for estimating faecal particle size and analysis of particle size distribution. Horses with large colon impactions were not more severely affected by oral pathology than control horses for both OPscore (P = 0.2) and PDI (P = 0.3). Faecal particle size estimates were significantly higher in control animals (P <0.001). No significant association was found between faecal particle size estimates and OPscores in horses with large colon impaction or control horses. In horses with large colon impaction, faecal particle size estimates increased with increasing PDI (P = 0.05). No associations were found between dental pathology and faecal particle size estimates. Horses developing large colon impaction did not have worse dentition than control horses.

This work assesses the current characterization framework of single-use personal protective equipment (PPE) per recognized consensus standards and presents a novel quantitative approach to refining characterization of barrier materials and predicting PPE performance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis software (Diameter J) were used to examine the microscopic fiber and pore structure of filter layers of surgical N95 filtering facepiece respirators, before and after exposure to chemicals used in decontamination modalities (vaporized hydrogen peroxide or ozone). The effect of porosity on penetration was assessed by bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) testing.

An integrated miniature time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) system coupled with a pocket-size 3D-printed laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) source is described. This 3D-printed LIAD source utilizes only a miniature deceleration motor to achieve two-dimensional motion of the target surface, simplifying the source structure and improving the long-term stability of mass spectrometry measurements. It has been successfully applied to analyze the model molecule creatinine and ingredients in an energy beverage (Red Bull), where main natural nutrients were clearly identified.

Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic has intensified shortages in various pharmaceutical products, notably injectable propofol in lipid emulsion form. Its demand surged sharply due to its critical role in intubating patients with respiratory distress during the pandemic, exposing vulnerabilities in the supply chain for this essential product.
Objectives: This project aims to develop an alternative formulation to commercially available propofol products and to evaluate its stability through a detailed study.

The protocol presented here enables the quantification of microplastics (MPs) as small as ~1 µm in diameter, accurate identification of polymer types, and estimation of particle volume, critically allowing for the calculation of MP mass. Representative results from samples collected in the Great South Bay (GSB), NY, showed that particles within the 1-6 µm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) range were the most abundant, with approximately 75% of particles measuring less than 5 µm. Notably, the pre-sieving step failed to yield any particles larger than 60 µm, suggesting that large MPs were rare at the coastal sites sampled.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has highlighted the critical need for safe and effective vaccines. In this study, subunit nanovaccine formulations were developed using the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein encapsulated in polymeric nanoparticles composed of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL). Two surfactants, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium cholate (SC), were evaluated during formulation via a modified water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) emulsion-solvent evaporation method.
