A total of 84 samples of wild and farmed fish, cephalopods and fish oils for animal feeding, traded in Spain, were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in 2009-2012, by gas chromatography-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS). The method was optimised for screening at moderate costs, allowing PCDD/Fs determination at 1 pg World Health Organization-toxic equivalent quantities (WHO-TEQ) g⁻¹ wet weight (w w) and dl-PCBs at 0.02 pg WHO-TEQ g⁻¹ w w. Concentrations in fish and cephalopods ranged from values below the limit of detection to 1.7 pg g⁻¹ WHO-TEQ sum PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, considered as safe with regard to EU legislation. Higher levels were found in cod livers (5.4-54.2) and fish oils (3.3-30.7), with one noncompliant sample in each group.

The catalytic mechanisms underlying the formation of polybrominated dibenzo--dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) have emerged as a critical environmental concern, particularly regarding the roles of metal- and metalloid-based catalysts. Although these catalysts are recognized as crucial agents for the formation of PBDD/Fs, there is still significant knowledge gaps in identifying the active species and quantifying their catalytic activities. This study systematically investigates four key reaction pathways governing PBDD/Fs formation: aromatic bromination, the Deacon reaction, the precursor, and the de novo synthesis process.

Human dietary exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and non dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs) is of worldwide scientific concern due to the health hazards associated with these compounds. In this study an estimation of the dietary intake of adolescents and adults in Greece was attempted for the first time. Representative samples from food categories widely consumed in Greece were collected and analyzed during a period of 21 years (2002-2022).

In this study, we evaluated the quantitative capabilities of a GC-APCI trapped ion mobility (TIMS) TOF platform for the determination of ultra-trace levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in complex food matrices. Using a Bruker timsTOF Pro 2 instrument, three fat-based proficiency test samples - fish oil, palm oil, and milk fat - were analyzed and compared to a validated GC-sectorHRMS method, in accordance with the criteria set by Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/644. Linearity was confirmed across broad dynamic ranges, with relative response factor (RRF) precision consistently below 20 %.

Importance: Agent Orange (AO), a toxic herbicide mixture contaminated with carcinogenic dioxin, was widely used during the Vietnam War. Although epidemiologic evidence suggests AO exposure is associated with increased lymphoid malignant neoplasm risk, the details of this association and its potential interaction with genetic factors remain unclear.
Objective: To evaluate (1) whether AO exposure was associated with increased risk of lymphoid malignant neoplasms, (2) associations of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) in specific lymphoid malignant neoplasms, and (3) whether there was a genetic component × exposure interaction associated with increased risk of developing lymphoid malignant neoplasms.
