Article Abstract

Biphenylophane 1 bridged by acetylene and diacetylene linkages was synthesized. X-ray analysis revealed its highly deformed diacetylene unit with a bond angle of 160°. Enantiomers of 1 resolved by chiral HPLC underwent facile racemization with an activation energy of 90.6 kJ mol(-1). Transannular cyclization of 1 was induced by heating to generate benzyne intermediate 8, which was intercepted by furan to give 9, and by treatment with bromine to give dibromodibenzopicene (10).

Bent-core nematic liquid crystals exhibit unique properties, including giant flexoelectricity and polar electro-optic responses, making them ideal for energy conversion and electro-optic applications. When confined in nanopores, they can stabilize chiral nanostructures, enhance polar order, and enable defect-driven switching - offering potential in nanofluidics, sensing, and adaptive optics. The thermotropic ordering of the bent-core dimer CB7CB confined in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and silica membranes with precisely engineered cylindrical nanochannels - ranging from just a few nanometers to several hundred nanometers-is examined.

Stepped disconnections enable innovative catalyst design by breaking spatial symmetry, tailoring electronic bands, and creating localized chemical environments for synergistic water oxidation catalysis. We developed ultrafine AgRuIr nanocrystals with dense stepped disconnections through rapid non-equilibrium crystallization using medium-temperature alcohol-assisted thermal reduction. Large-sized Ag atoms preferentially located at the line defects between the nanocrystalline domains divided by the stepped disconnection-mediated grain boundaries.

Objective: Human fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with cardiac dysfunction. However, it remains unclear whether alterations in the fetal heart in human pregnancy affected by FGR are a consequence of chronic fetal hypoxia. In this study, we used novel in-vivo ultrasound imaging modalities in pregnant sheep to evaluate fetal cardiac responses to progressive hypoxia in late gestation.

Partially coherent optical beams with twist phase have garnered significant attention due to their ability in optical engineering and imaging. However, a notable limitation in experimental synthesis has been the limited variety of light sources realized for generating these beams, which have largely been confined to uniform coherence structures. This paper examines a method for generating a novel twisted stochastic light source that exhibits not only a twist phase but also a circular-cosine coherence structure, maximizing the coherence among equidistant points from the center, varying in a cosine pattern with angular separation.

We theoretically investigate optical dispersion in twisted anisotropic materials, that is, when the optic axis undergoes a periodic modulation along the propagation axis while staying normal in the propagation direction. In the case of transversely homogeneous geometries, we show that both group velocity and group velocity dispersion can be largely tuned both in magnitude and sign by changing the medium anisotropy, the maximum rotation angle, the modulation period, and the input polarization. In doing that, we demonstrate to our knowledge a new type of optical spin-Hall effect occurring in the temporal domain.
