Objective: This study investigated the feasibility, timing and indications for closure of large muscular ventricular septal defects (VSDs) in infants without use of a cardiopulmonary bypass.
Methods: A total of 9 infants with large muscular VSDs ranging in size from 7 to 15 mm were treated by minimally invasive closure without cardiopulmonary bypass between April 2010 and February 2013.
Results: All surgeries were successful without resulting in uncontrolled systemic infection, a pulmonary hypertensive crisis or a severely low cardiac output, and with an apparently shorter operation time and postoperative tracheal cannula.
Conclusions: VSD closure without cardiopulmonary bypass can improve the efficacy and prognosis of infants with large muscular VSDs and concurrent pulmonary infections or respiratory failure.

Purpose: Develop a musculoskeletal-environment interaction model to reconstruct the dynamic-interaction process in skiing.
Methods: This study established a skier-ski-snow interaction (SSSI) model that integrated a 3D full-body musculoskeletal model, a flexible ski model, a ski boot model, a ski-snow contact model, and an air resistance model. An experimental method was developed to collect kinematic and kinetic data using IMUs, GPS, and plantar pressure measurement insoles, which were cost-effective and capable of capturing motion in large-scale field conditions.

Aim: To investigate parent-reported expressive language and social communication abilities in children with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1) treated with disease-modifying therapies.
Method: This was a cross-sectional feasibility study performed at the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, London (UK), and the Centro Clinico Nemo Pediatrico, Rome (Italy), testing the use of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MB-CDIs, 8 months+) to explore vocabulary production, and the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ, 4 years+) to investigate social communication.
Results: Fifteen participants completed the MB-CDIs (age range 2 years 2 months-6 years 9 months).

Avian pseudotuberculosis infection usually presents as well-demarcated visceral necrotic foci, typically affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver and spleen. This case series describes an atypical presentation of (Yptb) characterized by severe chronic myositis, arthritis and osteomyelitis in five village weavers (), and acute osteomyelitis and myositis associated with septicaemia in an oriental magpie robin () from a zoological collection. Clinical signs of the weavers included lethargy, poor flying ability and focally extensive periarticular and muscular swelling, whereas the magpie robin was found dead without premonitory signs.

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder with a largely unknown duration and pathophysiology of the pre-diagnostic phase, especially for the common non-monogenic form.
Methods: We leveraged the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort with up to 30 years of follow-up to identify incident ALS cases across five European countries. Pre-diagnostic plasma samples from initially healthy participants underwent high-throughput proteomic profiling (7,285 protein markers, SomaScan).

Background: Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is frequently associated with cardiac involvement. The underlying pathoanatomical substrate includes replacement of cardiomyocytes by fibrous tissue, leading to extensive myocardial fibrosis of the posterolateral wall of the left ventricular (LV) epicardium. Cardiac arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia (VT), are common in this condition, particularly when LV ejection fraction (LVEF) declines.
