Article Abstract

Songbirds, long of interest to basic neuroscience, have great potential as a model system for translational neuroscience. Songbirds learn their complex vocal behavior in a manner that exemplifies general processes of perceptual and motor skill learning and, more specifically, resembles human speech learning. Song is subserved by circuitry that is specialized for vocal learning and production but that has strong similarities to mammalian brain pathways. The combination of highly quantifiable behavior and discrete neural substrates facilitates understanding links between brain and behavior, both in normal states and in disease. Here we highlight (a) behavioral and mechanistic parallels between birdsong and aspects of speech and social communication, including insights into mirror neurons, the function of auditory feedback, and genes underlying social communication disorders, and (b) contributions of songbirds to understanding cortical-basal ganglia circuit function and dysfunction, including the possibility of harnessing adult neurogenesis for brain repair.

Patient portals have the potential to both improve and harm patient-clinician partnerships by reshaping how health information is exchanged and how patients and providers communicate. Patients ( = 20) and primary care clinicians ( = 11) purposively sampled from clinics serving diverse New Jersey communities were interviewed. Patients distinguished two portal functions - linear information exchange and bidirectional communication - but did so in different ways.

A flexible bipolarization conversion metasurface based on graphene is proposed in this paper, which can achieve single-band linear-to-linear (LTL) and dual-band linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion. The polarization conversion ratio (PCR) and axial ratio (AR) are dynamically regulated by varying the sheet resistance () of graphene. When = 1400 Ω Sq, the designed metasurface achieves a single-band LTL polarization conversion of 7.

Objective: This study applied the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to explore the barriers and enablers to optimizing post-operative pain management and supporting safe opioid use from the perspectives of both patients and health care professionals, applying the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF).

Design: Experience-based co-design (EBCD) qualitative study.

Methods: In the initial phase of the EBCD approach, focus groups were conducted comprising 20 participants, including 8 patients and 12 health care professionals involved in post-operative care.
