The fate of nanoparticles in organisms is of significant interest. In the current work, we used a test system with terrestrial isopods (Porcellio scaber) fed with food spiked with Cu NPs or soluble Cu salt for 14 days. Two different doses were used for spiking to yield final concentrations of 2000 and 5000 μg Cu/g dry food. After the exposure period, part of the exposed group of animals was transferred to clean food to depurate. Cu content was analyzed in the digestive glands, gut, and the 'rest' of the body. Similar patterns of (i) assimilated and depurated amounts of Cu, (ii) Cu body distribution, and (iii) effect on isopods feeding behavior were observed regardless of whether the animals were fed with Cu NPs or soluble Cu salt spiked food. Thus, Cu ions and not Cu NPs were assimilated by the digestive gland cells. Solubilization of the Cu NPs applied to the leaves was also analyzed with chemical methods and recombinant Cu-sensing bacteria. The comparison of the in vitro data on solubilization of Cu NPs and in vivo data on Cu accumulation in the animal tissues showed that about 99% of accumulated copper ions was dissolved from ingested Cu NPs in the digestive system of isopods.

In evolutionary time, aquatic crustaceans colonized land and faced new terrestrial predators such as spiders and ants. We tested the hypothesis that the crustacean terrestrial woodlouse produces defensive metabolites that provide protection against terrestrial predators. When attacked by a predator, expels proteinaceous secretions from its tegumental glands.

The ability of terrestrial isopods (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea) to protect themselves effectively from predation by birds has never been tested. They are equipped with glands producing chemical substances; moreover, some species show conspicuous coloration, which might suffice as an aposematic signal. We evaluated the palatability of isopods to birds.

Knowing the fate of nanoplastics in organisms is indispensable to assess the risk of these persistent environmental pollutants. We designed an in-depth study on the biodistribution of metal (europium)-doped polystyrene nanoparticles (EuPSs) in terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, Porcellio scaber) upon dietary exposure. Biodistribution of two types of spherical EuPSs, 100 nm and 300 nm, with similar Eu content and negligible dissolution of Eu ions in deionized water, was investigated.

It has been documented that some species of terrestrial isopods in the genera Porcellio and Armadillidium engage in turn alternation (TA) to maintain a straight path while exploring new terrains, escaping inhospitable conditions, or avoiding predators. Within Porcellio, such studies are most often conducted with Porcellio scaber (Latreille, 1804) or Porcellio laevis (Latreille, 1804), leaving the extent of TA in other species of Porcellio unexplored. Consequently, TA behavior is often assumed in other genera of isopods, despite the lack of documentation.

Cigarette filters comprise plasticised cellulose acetate, a synthetic polymer categorized as bioplastic. They represent a significant source of microplastics (MPs), in particular microfibers, and associated chemicals, yet their impact on organisms, especially soil invertebrates, is not well-studied. This research examines the effects of MPs milled from smoked (SCF-MPs) and unsmoked cigarette filters (UCF-MPs) on terrestrial invertebrates (Porcellio scaber, Tenebrio molitor) and aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna, Brachionus calyciflorus).
