Article Abstract

Controlling the confounding factors on respiratory hospitalizations such as long-term trend, meteorological factor, atmospheric pollution, and calendar effect, the research is designed to study the effect of sand-dust weather on respiratory diseases from 2001 to 2005 in Lanzhou City on the basis of the semi-parametric generalized additive model (GAM). The results indicate that there is an association between sand-dust weather and the increase in respiratory hospitalizations, and with lagging effect. There are gender and age differences in the effect of sand-dust weather on health, on male severer than on female (RR value being 1.148 for male, while 1.144 for female without statistical significance), and much greater on the aged ≥ 65 years than on < 65 years (RR value being 1.266 for ≥ 65 yr, and 1.119 for < 65 yr).

Zero-Shot Sand-Dust Image Restoration.

Sensors (Basel)

March 2025

School of Computer Science and Technology, Xinjiang University, Urumqi 830046, China.

Natural sand-dust weather is complicated, and synthetic sand-dust datasets cannot accurately reflect the properties of real sand-dust images. Sand-dust image enhancement and restoration methods that are based on enhancement, on priors, or on data-driven may not perform well in some scenes. Therefore, it is important to develop a robust sand-dust image restoration method to improve the information processing ability of computer vision.

Sand-dust weather seriously reduces the effectiveness of computer vision equipment acquisition. To solve this problem, a fast sand-dust video quality improvement method based on color correction and illumination compensation is proposed in this paper. The mapping function strategy designed in the paper has two methods for dealing with sand-dust video frames.

For nearly half a century, the East Asian sand-dust system (SDS) has undergone complex changes in intensity and has become a new focus of attention. To date, there are many uncertainties in understanding the complex observational facts of SDS using commonly used single-climate models. This study suggests that the SDS is an organized weather system that grows under the support of an atmospheric westerly belt environment (including water, soil, aerosol composition, and climate change).

High summer background O levels in the desert of northwest China.

Generally speaking, the precursors of ozone (O), nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds are very low in desert areas due to the lack of anthropogenic emissions and natural emissions, and thus O concentrations are relatively low. However, high summer background concentrations of about 100 µg/m or 60 ppb were found in the Alxa Desert in the highland of northwest China based on continuous summer observations from 2019 to 2021, which was higher than the most of natural background areas or clean areas in world for summer O background concentrations. The high O background concentrations were related to surface features and altitude.

The sand-dust weather and sand-dust storms have become a serious environmental disaster worldwide. It is an important challenge to develop technologies for desert sand solidification in order to prevent and control sand-dust weather. The biomineralization technology for solidifying desert sands has been a novel method for reinforced soils in recent years.
