Article Abstract

A metabolomics technology for lipid profiling based on supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) was applied to analyze lipids of soybean. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to discriminate twelve soybean cultivars according to their suitability for different processed foods such as natto, tofu, edamame, and nimame. By PCA assay, triacylglycerol (TAG) was found as the main variable for discrimination of soybean cultivars. Therefore, a high-throughput and high-resolution TAG profiling method by SFC/MS was developed to more effective discrimination. By investigating several columns, three Chromolith Performance RP-18e columns connected in series were chosen as the most effective column for TAG profiling. Diverse TAGs were separated effectively for 8 min without purification. Additionally, each TAG was identified successfully by the programmed cone voltage fragmentation even without MS/MS analysis and any standard sample.

Coextraction of Citrullus lanatus seeds and Citrus aurantium peels (1:1, w/w), two food processing wastes, was performed using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO) (345 bar|57 °C|178 min) and pet ether solvents. The major objective of the study was to valorize two fruit processing wastes to obtain a bioactive coextract using a green scCO extraction process and further incorporate it into wax-based composite oleofoams. The scCO coextraction resulted in better extraction of bioactive compounds such as d-limonene and polyunsaturated fatty acids due to the absence of light and lower temperature of extraction, compared to pet ether.

Research on liposome-composite hydrogel microspheres (LHMs) drug delivery systems, primarily composed of drugs, liposomes, and hydrogels, has garnered growing scientific interest. LHMs exhibit biosafety, modifiability, a wide range of loaded drug categories (water-soluble or fat-soluble), controlled and sustainable drug release capability, and specific cell-targeted performance, which compensate for the shortcomings of conventional drug delivery methods due to the complementary advantages of liposome and hydrogel microspheres. In this review, we systematically analyze the existing literature on LHMs and provide a comprehensive overview of their preparation methods.

Natural dyes have a rich historical significance, rooted in traditional practices that utilize plant materials, minerals, and organic substances to produce vibrant pigments. However, their use declined with the advent of synthetic dyes in the 19th century due to challenges in scalability, cost, and color consistency. Recent advancements in sustainability and modern technology have reignited interest in natural dyes, offering innovative solutions to overcome historical limitations.

From genes to products: High-efficiency biosynthesis and holistic optimization strategies for monounsaturated fatty acids.

Food Microbiol

January 2026

School of Food Science and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Nanjing Normal University, 2 Xuelin Road, Qixia District, Nanjing, 210023, China; State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), particularly palmitoleic, oleic and nervonic acids, serve essential functions in cardiovascular health, metabolic regulation and neuroprotection. Microbial fermentation has emerged as a sustainable production platform that circumvents the geographical constraints and high costs associated with traditional agricultural systems. This review establishes a holistic framework for sustainable MUFA production, systematically integrating upstream metabolic engineering (Δ9 desaturase pathway optimization and chassis strain design), midstream precision fermentation (artificial intelligence-driven dynamic control of bioreactor parameters), and downstream processing (supercritical fluid extraction and microencapsulation).

Tocopherols, major lipid-soluble components of vitamin E, are essential natural products with significant nutritional and pharmacological value. Their structural diversity and uneven distribution across vegetable oils require accurate analytical strategies for compositional profiling, quality control, and authenticity verification, amid concerns over food fraud and regulatory demands. Analytical challenges, such as matrix effects in complex oils and the cost trade-offs of green extraction methods, complicate these processes.
