Article Abstract

The use of Zeeman perturbed 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) to determine the ν+ and ν-14N lines in polycrystalline samples with several nonequivalent nitrogen atoms was investigated. The 14N NQR line shift due to a weak external Zeeman magnetic field was calculated, assuming isotropic distribution of EFG tensor directions. We calculated the broad line distribution of the ν+ and ν- line shifts and experimentally confirmed the calculated Zeeman field dependence of singularities (NQR peaks) in cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and aminotetrazole monohydrate (ATMH). The calculated and measured frequency shifts agreed well. The proposed measurement method enabled determination of which 14N NQR lines in ATMH belong to ν+ and which to ν- transitions.

The ability to rapidly detect the presence of narcotic substances in baggage and on personnel is a prime requirement in airports, mail distribution centres and mass screening portals. Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) is well-suited to detect selected narcotics as the resonances can be highly discriminating of a given substance due to the presence of narrow, non-overlapping spectral lines. Furthermore, the transparency of non-conductive materials to radio frequency (RF) magnetic fields allows for NQR to measure bulk volumes without any sample preparation.

Ribavirin, 1-(β-D-Ribofuranosyl)-1-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide, which is included in the list of drugs recommended in the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection, has been the subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. The most thermodynamically stable polymorphic form was studied using H-N NQR cross-relaxation, periodic DFT/QTAIM/RDS/3D Hirshfeld surfaces, and molecular docking. For the first time, a H-N cross-relaxation spectrum of ribavirin was recorded and interpreted.

Quadrupolar Resonance Spectroscopy of Individual Nuclei Using a Room-Temperature Quantum Sensor.

Nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) spectroscopy reveals chemical bonding patterns in materials and molecules through the unique coupling between nuclear spins and local fields. However, traditional NQR techniques require macroscopic ensembles of nuclei to yield a detectable signal, which obscures molecule-to-molecule variations. Solid-state spin qubits, such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, facilitate the detection and control of individual nuclei through their local magnetic couplings.

Effect of Dynamical Motion in Calculations of Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectra.

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra provide detailed information about the electronic and atomic structure of solids. Modern methods such as density functional theory (DFT) can be used to calculate NMR and NQR spectra from first-principles, providing a meaningful avenue to connect theory and experiment. Prediction of SSNMR and NQR spectra from DFT relies on accurate calculation of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor associated with the potential of electrons at the nuclear centers.

The electric field gradient tensor (considered here at the level of a nitrogen nucleus) can be described by two parameters: the largest element in the (,,) principal axis system, denoted by (leading to the nuclear quadrupole coupling), and the asymmetry parameter η = (|| - ||)/|| with || > || > ||. The frequencies of the three nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) transitions depend on both parameters but, for sensitivity reasons, their determination may be especially difficult and time consuming. For a partly rigid NH grouping with a labile proton, water nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry curves may exhibit these three transitions (dubbed quadrupolar dips or quadrupole relaxation enhancement (QRE)), provided that the NH grouping belongs to a moiety possessing a sufficient degree of ordering.
