It has been repeatedly suggested that mammalian cranial sutures act not only to allow growth but also to reduce the levels of strain experienced by the skull during feeding. However, because of the added complexity they introduce, sutures are rarely included in finite element (FE) models, despite their potential to influence strain results. Because sutures present different morphologies and with differing degrees of internal fusion, many different methods of modeling may be necessary to accurately measure strain environments. Alternatively, these variables may exert very little influence on the scale of a whole-skull model. To validate suture modeling methods, four alternative ways of including a suture in 3D FE models of the pig zygomatic arch were considered and compared with ex vivo experimental data from digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI). The use of DSPI rather than traditional strain gauge techniques allows strain gradients around the suture as well as the motions of the two bones to be observed. Results show that the introduction of 3D elements assigned more compliant material properties than the surrounding bone, is the most effective way of modeling both morphologies of suture, both in tension and compression. However, models containing no suture are almost indistinguishable from these compliant suture models, beyond the high strain gradient immediately adjacent to the suture. Conversely, modeling the suture as an open break in the mesh, or with spring elements assigned suture properties, fails to reproduce the experiment. Thus, although a solid but flexible model of sutures is preferred, the similarity between these models and those without sutures tentatively suggests that such extra detail may be unnecessary in pigs if the behavior of the whole skull is of interest.

Robotic mitral repair is often associated with longer ischaemic and cardiopulmonary bypass times, particularly early in the learning curve. We demonstrate a semi-continuous, three-suture technique for robotic annuloplasty that retains the mechanical principles of traditional interrupted sutures while leveraging the advantages of robotic precision and exposure. The use of pre-knotted sutures minimizes intra-cardiac knot tying, further enhancing procedural efficiency.

Bariatric endoscopy is an increasingly recognized alternative to surgery for obesity treatment. Recent guidelines from leading medical societies (IFSO, ASMBS, ASGE, ESGE) have included endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and the intragastric balloon (IGB) in their recommendations. These procedures are indicated for patients with a body mass index (BMI) between 27 and 40 kg/m² who cannot or do not wish to undergo surgery.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 621 patients who underwent laparoscopic or open choledocholithotomy combined with cholecystectomy between January 2017 and October 2024. Clinical data were collected, and univariate analysis followed by binary logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors for postoperative bile leakage and incisional infection.

Background: Current management of pediatric cutaneous abscesses involves either spontaneous healing by secondary intention or suturing through tertiary intention, which are often lengthy processes that cause discomfort and distress among children. As it is noninvasive and simple, a novel zipper device is widely used for the primary wound closure of surgical incisions.
Objective: To describe the effectiveness of novel zipper device use for pediatric cutaneous abscess wound closure in an outpatient context.
Objective: To compare short-term major complication rates among 4 staphylectomy techniques (cut-and-sew, CO2 laser, bipolar vessel-sealing device [BVSD], and BVSD with suture apposition [BVSD-SA]) in dogs with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).
Methods: A retrospective cohort of consecutive dogs that underwent staphylectomy for treatment of BOAS at 4 hospitals between 2012 and 2024 were identified. Dogs were excluded if they had concurrent illnesses likely to affect prognosis or a history of BOAS-related surgery.
