Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) may play an important role in the development of vulnerable carotid plaque. An A-to-G transition (-181A/G) in the promoter region of MMP7 is functional in vitro by altering the transcriptional activity of the gene. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the MMP7 -181A/G polymorphism and vulnerable carotid plaque formation.
Methods: The authors enrolled 641 patients and divided them into three groups according to the carotid ultrasound examination: vulnerable plaque group (n=118), stable plaque group (n=385) and no plaque group (n=138). Traditional atherosclerosis risk factors were recorded and the MMP7 -181A/G polymorphism was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.
Results: In the multinomial logistic regression analysis, compared to the no plaque group, no relationship between MMP7 -181AG+GG genotypes and stable carotid plaque was observed [odds ratio (OR) 1.50; p=0.239]. However, the frequency of AG+GG genotypes was significantly higher in the vulnerable plaque group (OR 2.74; p=0.008). Age was a risk factor for plaque formation, while statin treatment can reduce the prevalence of atherosclerotic plaque. Additionally, using binary logistic regression analysis between the stable and vulnerable plaque groups, this MMP7 polymorphism was associated with vulnerable plaque independently of other factors [OR 1.83; 95% confidence interval 1.08- 3.11; p=0.026].
Conclusions: The MMP7 -181A/G polymorphism is associated with the development of vulnerable carotid plaques. Age is a risk factor for plaque formation, while statin therapy is associated with a decreased prevalence of carotid atheromatous plaques.

Aim: To describe the percentage of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) cases in the Maspalomas Basic Health Zone among males aged 65 to 75 years who are current or former smokers. Our secondary objectives were to define the distribution of known risk factors for AAA development in our sample and to facilitate early referral to the appropriate vascular surgery service. We also aim to describe the percentage of subaneurysm cases, offering ultrasound follow-up at our center.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) have distinct pathognomonic features, but they frequently co-occur as mixed dementia (MD) in elderly adults. This study aimed to develop a novel MD mouse model using bilateral carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) in 5 times familial Alzheimer's disease (5xFAD) transgenic mice and characterize its behavioral and histological features.
Methods: Thirteen C57BL/6 and sixteen 5xFAD transgenic mice were prepared.

Background: Vascular calcification represents ectopic deposition of calcium phosphate in the arterial wall. Component analysis of calcifications using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has helped to elucidate arteriosclerosis, but reports examining carotid calcified plaque remain lacking. The present study qualitatively evaluated calcifications using DECT in patients with stroke in our institution.

Growing evidence indicates that coronary plaque instability is an independent risk factor for adverse coronary events, yet current optical coherence tomography (OCT) assessment of high-risk plaque characteristics (HRPC) relies largely on qualitative interpretation. The index of plaque attenuation (IPA) is a quantitative OCT-based metric that may provide a more objective evaluation. This retrospective observational diagnostic accuracy study assessed the performance of OCT-derived IPA for HRPC detection in patients with acute coronary syndrome or stable angina, using expert consensus qualitative OCT analysis as the reference standard.

Background: Guselkumab is effective in treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis; however, data from randomized controlled trials in the Chinese population are limited. This study evaluated and verified the efficacy and safety profile of guselkumab in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.
Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 4 study.
