Introduction: As experienced with the assistance evaluation of children/adolescents with chronic kidney disease in dialysis treatment on hospital we thought about which aspects could be relevant to the peritoneal dialysis (PD) application at home. The objective was to describe the level of schooling and information of the parents about the PD technique, general conditions of the place used to do PD at home and search association with inadequate technique.
Method: From March 2004 to May 2006 a descriptive study of an universe of 30 children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease treated in the HC/UFMG. To obtain the results was undertaken the software SPSS version 13.0. The parameters: low educational level, low family income, inadequate level of information, inadequate hygiene of hands during peritoneal dialysis (PD) procedure, were associated with worse quality of PD technique.
Results: The technique application of PD quality was considered inadequate in 18 (60%) patients. All the Odds Ratio values were into the confidence interval (95%) limits and were higher than 1 showing a possibility of a positive association between some independent variables and variable researched although without statistic significance.
Conclusion: The statistical analysis did not show association between the parameters tested although they may have a positive role in the success of the dialysis technique.

Uremic polyserositis is a rare and often underdiagnosed manifestation of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), typically characterized by concurrent or sequential inflammation of multiple serosal membranes. We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 40-year-old woman with ESRD on intermittent hemodialysis who presented with dyspnea following a missed dialysis session. Imaging revealed bilateral pleural effusions, a moderate-to-large pericardial effusion, and ascites.

Background Chronic kidney disease is a major global health problem, significantly increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications compared to the general population. Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) requires a healthy and functional peritoneal membrane for adequate ultrafiltration and fluid balance, making it a vital treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The spectrum of PD-associated peritoneal fibrosis encompasses a diverse range of collective mechanisms: peritoneal fibrogenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), peritonitis, angiogenesis, sub-mesothelial immune cells infiltration, and collagen deposition in the sub-mesothelial compact zone of the membrane that accompany deteriorating membrane function. In this narrative review, we summarize the repertoire of current knowledge about the structure, function, and pathophysiology of the peritoneal membrane, focusing on biomolecular mechanisms and signalling pathways that potentiate the development and progression of peritoneal fibrosis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) are the two primary renal replacement therapies for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). While PD is an effective and convenient modality, long-term use can lead to ultrafiltration failure, recurrent peritonitis, and progressive structural alterations in the peritoneal membrane, necessitating a transition to HD. In recent years, rather than a complete transition, the combined use of PD and HD has emerged as a viable alternative, offering potential advantages for selected patient populations.
