Article Abstract

Objective: To explore healthcare professionals' perceptions on the implementation of home hemodialysis and self-assisted hemodialysis in Singapore and to identify the perceived barriers, facilitators, and actionable strategies for increasing uptake.

Methods: This is a qualitative explorative study based on semi-structured face-to-face interviews conducted with a multidisciplinary group of 12 healthcare professionals at an acute teaching hospital in Singapore. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis.

Results: Four major themes were generated: "Key considerations to offering HHD and SAHD", "Perceived factors influencing HHD and SAHD uptake" and "Future perspectives of HHD and SAHD" and "Evolving Roles of Healthcare Professionals". Participants described a wide spectrum of patient agency, defined as the ability and willingness to make decisions and engage in care. Suitability was linked to characteristics such as younger age, self-discipline, and stable medical conditions, assessed through psychological screening, home evaluations, and social support reviews, with attention to avoiding coercion. Key barriers included caregiver burden, safety concerns, and limited space at home, while perceived facilitators included patient empowerment and flexibility. To support adoption, participants advocated for stepwise progression through SAHD, the development of a supportive ecosystem, strengthened financial and policy support, and building workforce capacity. While uptake of peritoneal dialysis was not expected to decline, participants anticipated ongoing challenges in health system readiness and provider engagement and emphasized the expanding educational and consultative role of nurses, with minimal changes expected for nephrologists and renal coordinators.

Conclusion: This study provided actionable insights to support structured, multidisciplinary implementation of HHD and SAHD.

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) are a cornerstone of modern health care delivery, but their current configuration often fragments information across systems, impeding timely and effective clinical decision-making. In gynecological oncology, where care involves complex, multidisciplinary coordination, these limitations can significantly impact the quality and efficiency of patient management. Few studies have examined how EHR systems support clinical decision-making from the perspective of end users.

Background: Labor shortages in health care pose significant challenges to sustaining high-quality care for people with intellectual disabilities. Social robots show promise in supporting both people with intellectual disabilities and their health care professionals; yet, few are fully developed and embedded in productive care environments. Implementation of such technologies is inherently complex, requiring careful examination of facilitators and barriers influencing sustained use.

Background: Over the past decade, the proportion of the world's population aged ≥65 years has grown exponentially, presenting significant challenges, such as social isolation and loneliness among this population. Assistive technologies have shown potential in enhancing the quality of life for older adults by improving their physical, cognitive, and communication abilities. Research has shown that smart televisions are user-friendly and commonly used among older adults.

Background: On September 27, 2024, Rwanda reported an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD), after a cluster of cases of viral hemorrhagic fever was detected at two urban hospitals.

Methods: We report key aspects of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment of MVD during this outbreak, as well as the overall response to the outbreak. We performed a retrospective epidemiologic and clinical analysis of data compiled across all pillars of the outbreak response and a case-series analysis to characterize clinical features, disease progression, and outcomes among patients who received supportive care and investigational therapeutic agents.
