Objective: To detect the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 6 of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in young men in North China and to investigate the relationship between these polymorphisms and lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration.
Methods: The recruited subjects aged from 18 to 40 years old were divided by MRI into degeneration group (n = 48) and non-degeneration group (n = 49). The genomic DNA was collected from blood. After PCR amplification, the SNPs of TIMP-1 exon 6 were detected by DNA sequencing.
Results: Only the TIMP-1 666C > T (rs11551797) polymorphism was observed and the genotype was of homozygote (CC/TT). The difference between two group was statistically significant (χ(2) = 4.571, P = 0.033). Although the polymorphism was a synonymous mutation, the TT genotype mutant type was one of the risk factors for lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (OR = 3.269, 95%CI 1.063 - 10.047). In the degeneration group, no significant correlation was found between the polymorphism, extent, level and number of degenerated intervertebral discs.
Conclusion: TIMP-1 666C > T polymorphism present in north Chinese young men may lead to lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration. However it has no effect on the degree, level and number of degenerated intervertebral discs.

Study DesignRetrospective cohort study.ObjectiveCondoliase is a chemonucleolysis for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) that enzymatically degrades herniated disc material with high specificity for chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. Few studies have compared condoliase treatment with surgical treatments.

Understanding spine biomechanics is essential for maintaining posture under static and dynamic conditions, relying on a balance of muscular and gravitational forces. Computational musculoskeletal (MSK) models are increasingly being used in biomechanical research as non-invasive alternatives to in vivo and in vitro methods. Two main MSK modeling strategies are multibody (MB) models, which simplify the spine using rigid vertebrae and intervertebral joints to study muscle recruitment, and finite element (FE) models, which provide detailed tissue representation but often rely on oversimplified loading conditions.

ObjectiveTo investigate the analgesic effects of acetaminophen-mannitol injections after endoscopic lumbar discectomy.MethodsThis is a prospective case-control study involving 60 patients who were randomly selected from those who underwent endoscopic lumbar discectomy for lumbar disc herniation or lumbar spinal stenosis at Sanshui District People's Hospital of Foshan between April and September 2024. Two groups were formed by randomly assigning patients, with each group containing 30 individuals.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the predictive efficacy of quantitative CT (QCT)-based endplate volumetric bone mineral density (EP-vBMD) and MRI-based endplate vertebral bone quality (EBQ) score for cage subsidence (CS) after lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF).
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent single-level LLIF in conjunction with pedicle screw fixation at the authors' institution between January 2019 and April 2023. The volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) was measured based on preoperative CT using phantom-less QCT software.
Purpose: This study examines the association between neurogenic injury and lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (LDD) in tethered cord syndrome (TCS) by comparing lumbar sagittal parameters and disc degeneration between patients with normal and abnormal somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) findings.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 43 patients diagnosed with TCS between July 2018 and July 2024. Based on tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) examination results, patients were categorized into SSEP-normal and SSEP-abnormal groups.
