Article Abstract

Aluminum smelters produce in excess thousand of tons of spent pot lining (SPL) each year. CAlSiFrit technology is a recycling process in which spent pot lining (SPL) is recovered and transformed into commercial value-added products. Since SPL contains beryllium (Be), exposures encountered by workers may result in adverse effects. This study aimed to establish the level at which Be is present in the CAlSiFrit and to determine the chemical and physical characteristics of the Be-containing particles. Three samples of CAlSiFrit powder supplied by the recycling industry were analyzed using several methods in order to (1) detect and characterize Be-containing particles, (2) identify the Be chemical form, and (3) quantify the amount of other major chemical elements present. These methods were: inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), analytical transmission electron microscopy (ATEM), and x-ray diffraction. Results show that the three samples have a similar chemical composition, with high concentrations, of Si, Ca, Al, Na, F, Fe, K, Mg, and Ti, in decreasing order. Be concentrations were low and totaled less than 3 ppm. The size of the areas where Be was detected by TOF-SIMS is approximately 0.3 mum or less in diameter. A large quantity of oxygen in the particles of dusts was observed. As the majority of elements present have a great affinity for oxygen, the presence of oxygen indicates that these elements are probably oxides. Finally, the particle size varied from approximately 0.05 to 1 mum. This is consistent with the interpretation of the TOF-SIMS results that suggest a size of approximately 0.3 mum or less for the particles containing Be. These results are important from the perspective that thousands of tons of CAlSiFrit, a supplementary cement material, might be produced and used.

Maximizing the exposure of edge sites and achieving sufficient promotion remain arduous tasks for designing efficient bimetallic MoS-based catalysts. Herein, ultrathin CoMoS nanosheets vertically grown on reduced graphene oxide (CoMoS/rGO-DMF) were fabricated by a facile one-pot solvothermal method using dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. The vertically aligned structure and good Co promotion endow CoMoS/rGO-DMF with abundant Co-Mo-S active sites and excellent catalytic performance in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction.

3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) is a versatile platform chemical with wide-ranging industrial applications. This study presents a proof-of-concept approach for producing 3-HP from brewer's spent grain (BSG) using a novel one-pot CaO pretreatment method and an engineered, acid-tolerant Issatchenkia orientalis IoDY01H strain. The effects of acid type for pH adjusting of pretreated slurry, nitrogen supplementation, NaHCO addition, and BSG deproteinization were evaluated.

Base-Mediated Scalable Synthesis of Polybenzothiazoles: Fused-Heterocycle-Engineered Recovery of Precious Metals.

Sulfur-containing fused heterocyclic polybenzothiazoles are promising materials with advanced functionalities, yet their synthesis has long been constrained by substrate limitations and scalability challenges. Here, a base-mediated multicomponent polymerization strategy using readily available elemental sulfur, aromatic diamines, and aromatic dialdehydes is developed to synthesize unprecedented polybenzothiazoles with scalability. By efficient alkaline activation of substrates through nucleophilic sulfurization-cyclization cascades, this method enables economically viable kilogram-scale production in a one-pot process with high yields (73-98%) and monomer universality, including previously incompatible electron-deficient aromatic amines.

The passage of nystatin through the ergosterol-containing phospholipid bilayer was studied on monovesicular and multivesicular giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs and MVVs). Phase-contrast optical microscopy was used to examine vesicles composed of a palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidyl-choline (POPC) bilayer with either 15 or 45 mol% ergosterol. Three types of vesicles were analyzed: (i) GUVs, (ii) outer vesicles (outGUVs) of MVVs, and (iii) inner vesicles (inGUVs) of MVVs.

Background: It has been widely validated that spent mushroom substrates (SMSs) facilitate carbon (C) source utilization for soil fertility improvement. Therefore, we conducted a research on a novel pattern to produce mushroom in situ during the winter fallow period after rice-fish coculture (RFC) in the same paddy field, and then utilized the SMSs after mushroom harvesting to supply organic fertilizer for the coming year's RFC.

Results: In order to investigate the effects and optimal use of SMSs, we employed a pot experiment with CK (organic fertilizer control), R (reduce 20% of organic fertilizer), SR (SMSs addition based on R treatment), and their combined with RFC to estimate nutrients availability, enzymes activities, and microbial resource limitation and C use efficiency.
