Article Abstract

Four software sensors based on standard on-line data from fermentation processes and simple mathematical models were used to monitor a number of state variables in Escherichia coli fed-batch processes: the biomass concentration, the specific growth rate, the oxygen transfer capacity of the bioreactor, and the new R(O/S) sensor which is the ratio between oxygen and energy substrate consumption. The R(O/S) variable grows continuously in a fed-batch culture with constant glucose feed, which reflects the increasing maintenance demand at declining specific growth rate. The R(O/S) sensor also responded to rapid pH shift-downs reflecting the increasing demand for maintenance energy. It is suggested that this sensor may be used to monitor the extent of physiological stress that demands energy for survival.

Achieving both high sensitivity and a wide detection range in flexible pressure sensors poses a challenge due to their inherent trade-off. Although porous structures offer promising solutions, conventional methods (templating, foaming, and freeze-drying) fail to precisely control cavity dimensions, spatial arrangement, and 3D morphology, which are crucial for sensing performance. This paper presents the development of a transmitter that transforms intermittent glucose sensors (isCGM) into a continuous and real-time glucose monitoring system (c-rtCGM), a key component in automated insulin delivery systems. The transmitter enhances the capabilities of conventional intermittent sensors by leveraging Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to capture raw glucose value and automatically transmit it via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE-Bluetooth 4.2 Dual-Mode) to a smart device every five minutes.
