A rapid, sensitive and accurate method has been developed for the determination of seventeen 2, 3, 7, 8-substituted congeners of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) in sediment using isotope dilution high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). Dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans were extracted from samples by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and then purified by fluid management systems (FMS) with silica column, alumina column and carbon column. Confirmation and quantitative analysis at pg/g level of PCDD/Fs were performed by HRGC/HRMS using voltage selective ion record (VSIR) mode. Recoveries of fifteen isotopically labeled compound solutions (LCS) and the precision and recovery standards (PAR) were found to be in the range of 49.8% -85.3% and 93.2% - 113.8%, respectively. The detection limits of the method for both 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachloro-dibenzo-furan (TCDF) and 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) were determined to be 0.1 pg/g. This method not only meets the requirements of international standards, but also shortens analysis time from 2 weeks to 2 days.

Background: Dioxin is an environmental pollutant as well as an endocrine disruptor in humans. Our longitudinal study wants to clarify the relationship between dioxin exposure and endocrine disorders in children living in the Vietnamese dioxin hotspot.
Method: Seventeen congeners of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzo-furans (PCDDs/PCDFs) in maternal breast milk and seven serum steroid hormones in children of 43 and 46 mothers and their 9-year-old children from the non-exposure and the hotspot areas were measured, respectively.

The Ya-Er Lake is a seriously polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) and mercury (Hg)-contaminated lake by pesticide and chlor-alkali plants in China. The oxidation pond method has been conducted to control pollution, moreover, the contaminated sediment was dredged and stacked, becoming a sediment stack yard for vegetable cultivation. To assess effects of oxidation pond method and dredging programme on pollution management and long-term risks of PCDD/Fs and Hg, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs, total Hg (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg) in soil and vegetable sampled from the sediment stack yard were measured and analyzed.

Large amounts of herbicides containing polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) were sprayed in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Levels of PCDD/Fs in the environment of South Vietnam remained high even 40 years later. A total of 861 breast milk samples (597 from three areas sprayed with herbicides, Quang Tri, Da Nang, and Bien Hoa, and 264 from three unsprayed areas in North Vietnam) were collected between 2007 and 2015 and the PCDD/F concentrations in the samples were determined.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) are highly toxic and persistent compounds that provoke a wave of publicity. Bromophenols are important precursors for forming PBDD/Fs, and their reaction path has always been a research hotspot. In this study, the formation characteristic of PBDD/Fs from 2,4,6-TBP were studied.

Diet is the major route of exposure to environmental contaminants in biota and, after penetration into an organism, xenobiotics continue to accumulate in the body. In birds the egg-laying process acts as a transfer mechanism for the accumulated pollutants and results in the burdening of the next generation at an early stage of development. This transfer has a strong influence on developmental disorders and even breeding success.
