Variations of a subject's vigilance may pose a severe confound during functional brain mapping. Here, we focused on BOLD MRI responses to eyes opening and closing in complete darkness and the associated changes in the EEG's alpha frequency band (Berger's effect) as a possible approach to this problem. In awake subjects, BOLD MRI activation patterns were positively correlated to eyes opening and negatively to alpha power. In contrast, activation patterns of subjects with diminished wakefulness as determined by alpha band analysis were negatively correlated to eyes opening. We conclude that a control of the subjects' state of wakefulness must be of prime concern for functional MRI, especially for paradigms which allow for a free shift of vigilance.

Purpose: To reassess the anatomic basis of optic disc pit maculopathy (OPM) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and to characterize the broader structural abnormalities comprising the optic pit complex.
Methods: Sixteen patients with OPM were imaged using a high-resolution SS-OCT system (DREAM OCT). Cross-sectional and volume-rendered scans were analyzed for lamina cribrosa defects, intraneural cavitations, and pathways for fluid entry into or beneath the retina.

Purpose: To characterize the 3D structural phenotypes of the optic nerve head (ONH) in patients with glaucoma, high myopia, and concurrent high myopia and glaucoma, and to evaluate their variations across these conditions.
Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study.
Participants: A total of 685 optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans from 754 subjects of Singapore-Chinese ethnicity, including 256 healthy (H), 94 highly myopic (HM), 227 glaucomatous (G), and 108 highly myopic with glaucoma (HMG) cases METHODS: We segmented the retinal and connective tissue layers from OCT volumes and their boundary edges were converted into 3D point clouds.
Snake envenomation is a neglected tropical disease with two million snake bites reported each year (WHO). Much less common is snake venom ophthalmia secondary to eye exposure from spitting snakes. This paper reports an unusual case of systemic envenomation via the ocular route of a 14-year old male from the Philippines.

Repeated exposure to gestational general anesthesia during pregnancy has been associated with neurodevelopmental damage and cognitive and social dysfunction in offspring. This study investigates the underlying mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for mitigating these effects. Behavioral tests revealed significant impairments in cognitive, social, and spatial learning abilities in the offspring of general anesthesia-treated mice, alongside delayed eye-opening, reduced body weight, and neuronal damage.

CAR-T cell therapy is rapidly being extended to target various pathophysiological processes beyond cancer. In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, Zhao et al. engineered PDGFRβ-specific CAR-T cells in vivo to selectively target extracellular matrix-producing cells in kidney fibrosis, opening new opportunities for treating fibrotic diseases with precision immunotherapy.
