Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of spread through air spaces (STAS) in patients with early-stage primary lung cancer and to elucidate the association between STAS and various clinicopathological factors.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from a total of 265 consecutive patients who underwent lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection (172 patients) or sublobar resection (93 patients) for completely resected pathological stage I lung adenocarcinoma. We evaluated clinical variables, including the preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level, tumour size, consolidation tumour ratio (CTR), maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) on FDG-PET, histological results, presence of STAS and vascular and lymphatic invasion.

In our study, one or more glucose degradation products (GDPs) in freshly heat sterilized dextrose 5% in water (D5W) were found to react with a drug candidate having a β-keto amide group (Compound A) to form several drug related compounds with the same molecular weight. However the previously identified GDPs did not react with Compound A to produce the observed adducts, indicating that unidentified GDP(s) reacted with Compound A to form these adducts. Our investigation by reaction-directed fractionation of the reactive D5W with HPLC led to the identification of the reactive GDP, trans-3,4-dideoxyglucosone-3-ene (trans-3,4-DGE), responsible for producing these reaction products.

Myrosinase is a cytosolic plant enzyme present in daikon ( Raphanus sativus, Japanese white radish) roots that hydrolyzes 4-methylthio-3-butenyl glucosinolate (MTBGLS) into the natural pungent agent 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC), which possesses antimicrobial, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. In the present study, papaya (Carica papaya) seed and edible pulp were carefully separated and then the contents of benzyl isothiocyanate and the corresponding glucosinolate (benzyl glucosinolate, glucotropaeolin) quantified in each part. The papaya seed with myrosinase inactivation contained >1 mmol of benzyl glucosinolate in 100 g of fresh seed. This content is equivalent to that of Karami daikon (the hottest Japanese white radish) or that of cress.
