Using systematic review and meta-analysis methodology, we sought to evaluate the accuracy of the gestation-adjusted projection (GAP) method of fetal weight extrapolation in the prediction of actual birth weight.A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published from database inception to June 2023. Studies were compiled that assessed the accuracy of the GAP method in pregnant women at term (≥37 weeks gestation) with an ultrasound performed at 34 to 36 weeks gestation.

Cardiac autoantibodies promote a fibrotic transcriptome and reduced ventricular recovery in human myocarditis.

Myocarditis leads to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with one-third failing to recover normal ejection fraction (EF 50%). Our previous studies have supported a Th17 autoimmune pathogenesis where IL17A and IL-6 are elevated in myocarditis patients who do not recover normal EF. Antecedent group A streptococcal pharyngitis is a well-established cause of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) where rheumatic valvular heart disease (RHD) and Sydenham chorea (SC) are major manifestations. In ARF, crossreactive antibodies and T cells respond to streptococcal antigens, group A carbohydrate, N-acetyl-β--glucosamine (GlcNAc), and M protein, respectively, and through molecular mimicry target heart and brain tissues. In this translational human study, we further address our hypothesis regarding specific pathogenic humoral and cellular immune mechanisms leading to streptococcal sequelae in a small pilot study.

Novel Experimental In-Office Bleaching Gels Containing Co-Doped Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles.

The present study reports on the development and testing of novel bleaching agents containing co-doped metaloxide nanoparticles (NP; 0%, 5%, 10% v/w) and hydrogen peroxide (HP, 0%, 6%, 15%, and 35%). Bovine blocks (n = 200, A = 36 mm2) were obtained and randomly distributed into experimental groups (n = 10/group). NPs were incorporated into gels before bleaching (3 sessions, 7 days apart, 30 min/session, irradiated with violet light-LT).

Effects of enzyme-based removal of collagen and elastin constituents on the biaxial mechanical responses of porcine atrioventricular heart valve anterior leaflets.

The leaflets of the atrioventricular heart valves (AHVs) regulate the one-directional flow of blood through a coordination of the extracellular matrix components, including the collagen fibers, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. Dysfunction of the AHVs, such as those caused by unfavorable microstructural remodeling, lead to valvular heart diseases and improper blood flow, which can ultimately cause heart failure. In order to better understand the mechanics and remodeling of the AHV leaflets and how therapeutics can inadvertently cause adverse microstructural changes, a systematic characterization of the role of each constituent in the biomechanical properties is appropriate.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the metabolism of Streptococcus mutans biofilms after 1-7 days of growth on different orthodontic adhesives.

Methods: Specimens of 6 commercial orthodontic adhesives were fabricated in custom-made molds and polymerized using a light-emitting diode light-curing unit. Bioluminescent S mutans (UA159:JM10) biofilms were grown on ultraviolet-sterilized specimens for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days (n = 18 biofilms/d/product) in anaerobic conditions at 37°C.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a controlled evaluation of mebendazole's therapeutic efficacy in cell culture and in vivo models of ovarian cancer. An Evaluation of Neurosurgical Practices During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic.

Objective: We sought to understand how the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has affected the neurosurgical workforce.

Methods: We created a survey consisting of 22 questions to assess the respondent's operative experience, location, type of practice, subspecialty, changes in clinic and operative volumes, changes to staff, and changes to income since the pandemic began. The survey was distributed electronically to neurosurgeons throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Misclassification Error-Adjusted Prevalence of Injection Drug Use Among Infective Endocarditis Hospitalizations in the United States: A Serial Cross-Sectional Analysis of the 2007-2016 National Inpatient Sample.

Administrative health databases have been used to monitor trends in infective endocarditis hospitalization related to nonprescription injection drug use (IDU) using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code algorithms. Because no ICD code for IDU exists, drug dependence and hepatitis C virus (HCV) have been used as surrogate measures for IDU, making misclassification error (ME) a threat to the accuracy of existing estimates. In a serial cross-sectional analysis, we compared the unadjusted and ME-adjusted prevalences of IDU among 70,899 unweighted endocarditis hospitalizations in the 2007-2016 National Inpatient Sample.
