Article Synopsis
  • A new study in the French West Indies examines the connection between chlordecone pesticide soil contamination and cancer rates in Martinique from 2006 to 2019, using a more sensitive contamination indicator.
  • This study analyzed data from 23,218 cancer cases, finding that women exposed to higher soil contamination levels showed an increased risk for several cancers, including lung and thyroid cancer, while no significant correlation was observed for breast or prostate cancer.
  • The findings suggest that women in Martinique are disproportionately affected by chlordecone exposure, highlighting the need for ongoing research into the environmental impacts of pesticides on public health.

Objectives: Sexuality is an important dimension of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cancer patients. Studies evidence that most patients report impairments of their sexual health related to their disease or its treatment. The Quality of Life Group of the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) developed a patient reported outcome measure assessing multidimensional aspects of sexual health.

Background: Thyroid cancer (TC) overall survival at 5 years was estimated at 97% in mainland France over 2010-2015. Its prognosis is known to be affected by patient age, tumor histology, size, and extension. This study aims to describe overall survival of thyroid cancer patients diagnosed between 2008 and 2018 in Martinique.

Background: Martinique shares with the other Caribbean countries specific public health issues, particularly in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of cancer patients. Mutualization of human and material resources by promoting cooperation is the most appropriate response to the challenges of the health systems of the Caribbean territories. Through the French PRPH-3 program, we propose to set up a collaborative digital platform adapted to the specificities of the Caribbean to strengthen professional links and skills in oncofertility and oncosexology and reduce inequalities in access to reproductive and sexual health care for cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes breast cancer survival in women from Martinique between 2008-2017, focusing on various prognostic factors such as demographics, cancer stage, and hormone receptor status.
  • A total of 1,708 patients were included, revealing a median age of 57 years, with 20.9% diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and one-year overall survival (OS) rates of 95.2%, dropping to 80.1% at five years.
  • The findings highlight that metastatic disease, TNBC, HR+/HER2- status, and age over 75 significantly increase the risk of death, marking it as a crucial study for understanding breast cancer outcomes in this region.

  • The text outlines guidelines for fertility preservation (FP) in patients undergoing cancer treatment, emphasizing the importance of informing reproductive-aged individuals about the risk of gonadotoxicity from treatments.
  • It recommends specific FP strategies based on age and treatment type, such as oocyte cryopreservation for women and sperm cryopreservation for men, with additional options for higher-risk cases.
  • The choice of FP method should ultimately be made by the patient, considering their specific circumstances and treatment plans.

Background: In the French West-Indies, few studies have been performed on fertility and sexual problems in cancer survivors, which are frequent and recurring issues reported by surveys on unmet needs. Additionally, mutualizing human and material resources and promoting cooperation through a collaborative platform are the most appropriate response to complex health pathways in the Caribbean territories. Implementation of such a collaborative platform will help to launch a strategic Caribbean partnership to transfer theoretical and technical skills and care standards in oncofertility and oncosexuality.

Purpose: Women's sexual health and wellbeing with cervical or vaginal cancer may be largely affected by complications from external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and utero-vaginal brachytherapy (BT), of which vaginal stenosis is the main complication. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of support by a nurse sexologist on sexuality, vaginal side-effects, and the quality of clinical follow-up in patients treated with brachytherapy for cervical or vaginal cancer.

Methods: We performed a retrospective study of the sexuality of women treated for cervical or vaginal cancer.

In non-azoospermic patients with low semen volume (LSV), looking for partial retrograde ejaculation (PRE) by searching sperm in the postejaculatory urine (PEU) is required. The use of a retro-ejaculatory index (R-ratio) was suggested to define PRE, but none of the studies indicated a specific threshold above which PRE must be considered. Our objective was to propose a threshold value for the R-ratio as indicative of PRE in patients with LSV selected to be devoid of any known causes or risk factors for retrograde ejaculation or LSV.
