Osteosarcoma is a common and aggressive bone cancer in children and adolescents, typically affecting the long bones during growth spurts. Treatment involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Although surgery has become more limb-preserving, the overall prognosis remains challenging, with a 5-year survival rate of 60-70% for localized disease and much lower for advanced stages.

SP7, also known as Osterix, is a zinc finger-containing transcription factor, plays a crucial role in osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. This review examines the molecular mechanisms underlying SP7's regulatory functions, highlighting its interactions with key signaling pathways such as BMP-SMAD, Wnt/β-catenin, and HIF-1α. SP7 acts downstream of RUNX2 to regulate osteogenic gene expression, including collagen Type I Alpha 1 (COL1A1), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OCN).

Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of solid and liquid air pollutants floating in the air, and it is the most harmful form of air pollutant because it can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream and cause various breathing problems. Neutrophil elastase (NE) is known to be a major constituent of lung proteolytic activity and potently stimulates mucus secretion during airway inflammation. Aesculetin is a coumarin derivative that has anti-inflammatory properties in blood vessels and the immune system.

Wrist pain is common among athletes, particularly weightlifters, who perform repetitive high-intensity movements like the snatch and clean and jerk. Conventional treatments, including NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and physical therapy, often provide only symptomatic relief. This case report highlights effective management of acute wrist pain in a competitive weightlifter using Tendon Traction Point (TTP)-focused dextrose injections.

: During laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (LPPG), the preservation of the infra-pyloric artery (IPA) and dissection of the infra-pyloric lymph node (LN) station 6 are essential, underscoring the importance of understanding the anatomical structure of the IPA. This study aimed to investigate anatomical variations in the IPA and surgical outcomes based on data from a multicenter prospective trial. : A post hoc analysis was conducted based on the Korean Laparoendoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study (KLASS)-04 trial, in which patients randomly underwent LPPG or laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG).

Posterior neck, trapezius, and interscapular pain, exacerbated by poor posture such as forward head and rounded shoulders, is common. In this study, we aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of isotonic saline injections at nerve entrapment points (NEPs) within the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and scalenus medius (SM) muscles for alleviating spinal accessory nerve (SAN) and dorsal scapular nerve (DSN) compression in patients suffering from posterior neck, trapezius, and interscapular pain. In this retrospective study, 68 patients were included, with 34 receiving isotonic saline injections and 34 undergoing Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) as a control.

Degenerative tendinopathy results from the accumulation of minor injuries following unsuccessful tendon repair during acute tendon injuries. The process of tendon repair is prolonged and varies between individuals, making it susceptible to reinjury. Moreover, treating chronic tendinopathy often requires expensive and extensive rehabilitation, along with a variety of combined therapies to facilitate recovery.

Background/objectives: Atherosclerosis particularly due to high circulating level of low-density lipoprotein is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases. Ellagic acid is a natural polyphenolic compound rich in pomegranates and berries. Our previous study showed that ellagic acid improved functionality of reverse cholesterol transport in murine model of atherosclerosis.

Breast cancer (BrCa) remains a significant health concern globally, influenced by both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors. Limited studies have explored the role of color-specific vegetables and fruits, which are rich in specific phytonutrients, on BrCa risk. We hypothesized that consuming color-specific vegetables and fruits may decrease BrCa risk in Korean women.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sentinel node navigation (SNN) is effective for stomach-preserving surgery in early gastric cancer but has technical challenges in practice.
  • - A study analyzed data from the SENORITA trial, evaluating the effectiveness of regional lymphadenectomy without SNN on 237 patients, focusing on lymph node metastasis in relation to tumor location.
  • - Results indicated that while SNN showed higher sensitivity and negative predictive values for detecting metastasis compared to regional lymphadenectomy, completely omitting SNN in surgery was deemed insufficient and not recommended.

  • The study investigates how eucalyptol, a natural compound found in eucalyptus, can protect the inner blood-retinal barrier (BRB) from damage caused by diabetes, specifically regarding issues like diabetic macular edema.
  • Eucalyptol was found to reduce harmful amyloid-β protein levels in both human retinal cells and diabetic mouse models, while also preventing cell death through targeted inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways.
  • The compound promotes healthy Angiopoietin signaling, reducing vascular leaks and improving the integrity of the inner BRB in diabetic retinas, suggesting potential new treatments for retinal complications associated with diabetes.

Background: Gastric liposarcoma (GL) is extremely rare and radical surgery has been the conventional treatment, even in small tumors. Laparoscopic wedge resection has been reported worldwide for subepithelial tumors of the stomach.

Case Presentation: The patient was an asymptomatic 63-year-old man presenting with a subepithelial gastric tumor.

  • Intraoperative pathologic examination of sentinel nodes during gastric cancer surgery is vital for determining how extensive the surgery should be.
  • A study from 2013 to 2016 evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of these intraoperative protocols, using data from a multicenter trial and examining sentinel lymph nodes with various staining methods.
  • Results showed that the single-section HE staining method effectively detected macrometastasis, and if sentinel nodes are negative, it is safe to proceed with sentinel basin dissection; otherwise, standard surgery is necessary.

Article Synopsis
  • High levels of LDL cholesterol contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic lesions, and the study investigates the role of ellagic acid in improving cholesterol transport in mice lacking the apoE gene.
  • The research fed wild type and apoE knockout mice a high-cholesterol diet and supplemented them with ellagic acid, which showed enhanced cholesterol efflux in macrophages and improved hypercholesterolemia.
  • Results indicate that ellagic acid not only reduced factors contributing to atherosclerosis but also influenced the expression of important transport proteins, suggesting its potential as a protective dietary component against diet-induced atherogenesis.*

  • Dyslipidemia, linked to high blood lipids, can lead to issues like atherosclerosis, but Purple perilla frutescens extract (PPE) and its compound α-asarone may help reduce inflammation and atheroma formation in a specific mouse model.
  • In the study, apoE-deficient mice were given a high cholesterol diet along with PPE and α-asarone for 10 weeks, showing improvements in their blood lipid profiles, reduced inflammation, and lower levels of harmful lipoproteins.
  • The treatments contributed to less atheroma formation and enhanced liver function related to cholesterol management, indicating potential benefits of PPE and α-asarone for managing dyslipidemia.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed how well surgeons in Korea followed the 2018 gastric cancer treatment guidelines using data from a national survey in 2019.
  • The compliance rates for surgical procedures like gastric resection and lymph node dissection were overall high, ranging between 83% to 100% in 2019, akin to rates from 2014.
  • However, the survey also revealed that nearly half of the patients who had surgery were at stage IV disease, which goes against the guidelines, indicating areas for improvement.
