In urban areas, environmental exposures to air pollution, extreme temperatures and noise as well as socio-economic inequalities are amplified. Urban green spaces offer dual benefits: they help mitigate climate change and improve public health by fostering connection to nature, reducing noise and air pollution, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and promoting physical activity. Within the 2023 "Cobenefici di Salute ed equità a supporto dei piani di risposta ai cambiamenti climatici in Italia" project funded by the Ministry of Health, we identified health indicators to assess climate action co-benefits, including those on cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity, birth outcomes and mental health.

Climate change has negative effects on mental health as shown by the World health organization (Who). Heatwaves can exacerbate some mental conditions such as schizophrenia and psychosis, both in the elderly and children as well as in young adults, and increase mortality for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Subjects facing climate events such as heavy rains and flooding may suffer from a psychological problem in the short, medium and long-term.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review was conducted to estimate the global prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates of myasthenia gravis (MG) and related syndromes, due to a gap in recent investigations.
  • The review analyzed 94 studies published from 1952 to 2022, finding a mean prevalence of 173.3 cases per million, a mean incidence of 15.7 cases per million person-years, and a mean mortality rate of 1.4 cases per million person-years, with acetylcholine receptor (AChR)-MG being the most common subtype.
  • The review highlighted that the significant increase in reported MG cases may stem from enhanced research methods and diagnostic tools, though variations in MG frequencies exist due to

Learning to read and write are essential academic skills that children develop during their early years of primary school. These skills are supported by various predictive indices that emerge in early childhood. This review has three main goals: to identify which factors are closely examined as predictors for reading and writing, specifically decoding and encoding skills, in different populations and languages (Objective 1); to assess the longitudinal relationship between these predictors and reading and writing skills (Objective 2), considering difficulties or disorders in these areas (Objective 3), during school-age.

  • The Italian Society of Echography and Cardiovascular Imaging (SIECVI) conducted a national survey to investigate stress echocardiography (SE) practices across Italy, collecting data from 228 laboratories in November 2022.
  • The survey revealed that out of 179 centers performing SE, most were located in northern Italy, and the study categorized them into low, moderate, and high volume of activity based on the number of SE examinations.
  • Key findings indicated differences in the use of stressors, with a tendency for high-volume centers to employ multiple stress techniques and incorporate advanced evaluations like coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR) more frequently than low and moderate volume centers.

Article Synopsis
  • Echocardiographic Pulmonary to Left Atrial Ratio (ePLAR) is a non-invasive method to evaluate pulmonary function and assess the risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients.
  • A study of 100 COVID-19 patients in Italy found that those with ePLAR values over 0.28 m/s had a higher, though not statistically significant, rate of in-hospital death compared to those with lower values (27% vs. 10.8%).
  • The research indicates that elevated ePLAR, particularly when combined with high pulmonary arterial pressure, can help identify patients at greater risk of death, suggesting the importance of early ePLAR assessment in hospital settings.
