Neurodegenerative diseases involve progressive neuronal dysfunction, requiring the identification of specific pathological features for accurate diagnosis. While cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroimaging are commonly used, their invasive nature and high costs limit clinical applicability. Recently advances in plasma proteomics offer a less invasive and cost-effective alternative, further enhanced by machine learning (ML).

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the use of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) with a pelvic acoustic driver to detect and classify prostate cancer (PCa) in 75 patients suspected of having the disease.
  • The stiffness values measured in PCa (4.9 kPa) were significantly different from those in normal prostate tissue (3.6 kPa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (4.5 kPa), indicating the potential of MRE in distinguishing between these conditions.
  • The results suggest that MRE could enhance the accuracy of multi-parametric MRI for PCa detection, achieving an accuracy of 87% when comparing PCa and normal tissue under specific stiffness cutoff values.

Many individuals seek medical attention for tinnitus, desiring relief from the distress caused by the condition; however, the treatment process is far from straightforward. The most effective treatments for chronic subjective tinnitus, such as tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), require considerable time and efforts. As a result, many of them express a desire for alleviation through medication.

The aim of this study was to compare diagnostic performance for extra-prostatic extension (EPE) and image quality among three image datasets: conventional T2-weighted images (T2WI, slice thickness, 3 mm) and high-resolution thin-slice T2WI (T2WI, 2 mm), with and without deep learning reconstruction (DLR) in patients with prostatic cancer (PCa). A total of 88 consecutive patients (28 EPE-positive and 60 negative) diagnosed with PCa via radical prostatectomy who had undergone 3T-MRI were included. Two independent reviewers performed a crossover review in three sessions, in which each reviewer recorded five-point confidence scores for the presence of EPE and image quality using a five-point Likert scale.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), finding no significant association between CRS and increased AMI rates among patients.
  • - Utilizing the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, researchers compared nearly 1 million CRS patients to over 9 million control subjects, adjusting for factors like age, sex, and cardiovascular risk.
  • - Results suggest that patients with CRS actually had better cardiovascular profiles than controls, indicating that CRS does not contribute to a higher incidence of AMI when accounting for other cardiovascular risk factors.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a benign tumor characterized by slow-growing mixed tumors in the craniofacial area. It is relatively common in salivary glands; however, PA of the nasal cavity, which arises in the minor salivary glands, is rare. We present the case of a large PA in the nasal cavity of an adult immunocompetent woman with nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis.
