Background: People with thoracic trauma often present to the emergency department with low-energy injuries and sustain rib fractures. This study aimed to assess the risk of traumatic pneumothorax in a patient cohort based on the radiological characteristics of rib fractures, along with patient and environmental variables.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of demographic characteristics, the number and nature of rib fractures, the date of trauma, and the correlation between pneumothorax and rib fractures in patients treated in the thoracic surgery departments of three centers between May 2021 and August 2024.

Pneumomediastinum is a rare but potentially serious complication characterized by the presence of air within mediastinal structures. Although it is typically associated with thoracic trauma or vigorous coughing, it can also occur following dental procedures involving high-speed air-turbine drills. During these procedures, air can enter the cervical fascial planes and potentially extend to the mediastinum, leading to risks like deep neck infections or mediastinitis.

The precise assessment of hemothorax risk resulting from a rib fracture is not feasible. CT images, patient characteristics, and clinical experience are utilized in daily practice to assess risk intuitively. This study aimed to identify specific markers on CT images that can predict the risk of hemothorax.

  • The study investigates the significant disagreements among physicians regarding the definition and understanding of massive pleurisy (MP), which is often highlighted by the volume of pleural effusion.
  • A questionnaire with visual and true/false sections was administered to 150 physicians across four centers to assess their perceptions and approaches to diagnosing and treating MP.
  • Results showed notable variances in opinions among different medical branches, emphasizing the necessity for a standardized definition of MP to enhance clinician collaboration and improve patient care.
