Mumps Vaccine-Associated Aseptic Meningitis Complicated by Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion.

Mumps vaccine is generally safe; however, aseptic meningitis remains a rare but recognized adverse event. We report the case of a 15-year-old male who developed a progressive headache and hyponatremia, leading to a diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). As his symptoms worsened, CSF analysis revealed pleocytosis with monocyte predominance and elevated protein levels, resulting in a diagnosis of aseptic meningitis.

STEPWISE CARDIAC REHABILITATION ADJUSTMENT AFTER EXERCISE-INDUCED IMPLANTABLE CARDIOVERTER DEFIBRILLATOR SHOCK: A CASE REPORT.

Objective: To report an in-hospital cardiac rehabilitation strategy after exercise-induced implantable cardioverter defibrillator shock.

Case Report: A 72-year-old man with heart failure, peripheral artery disease, a history of percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass surgery, exercise-induced ventricular fibrillation, and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator was hospitalised after experiencing recurrent ventricular fibrillation while walking, which triggered implantable cardioverter defibrillator shock. While hospitalised, his medication regimen was adjusted.

Disease management using home-based cardiac rehabilitation for patients with heart failure.

Unlabelled: Home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) is expected to address the low participation rate in cardiac rehabilitation; however, it is not covered by insurance in Japan, and the optimal method for monitoring a patient's condition during exercise has not been determined. Patients hospitalized for heart failure often deteriorate soon after discharge and require appropriate disease monitoring. In this report, we describe cases in which real-time monitoring of exercise intensity, electrocardiography, and video chat during HBCR was useful in the management of heart failure.

Membrane excitabilities in neonatal rat mesencephalic trigeminal neurons under dietary zinc deficiency.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of zinc deprivation on the properties of membrane and spike-discharge features of mesencephalic trigeminal neurons (MTNs), which are important sensory neurons for oral-motor reflexes and rhythmical jaw movements.

Methods: Neonatal Sprague Dawley rats (P10-12) were distributed equally into a normal diet group and a zinc-deficient diet (ZD) group. Whole cell patch-clamp recordings were obtained from MTNs from coronal brain slices.

Primary Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of Cheek: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma characterized by an alveolar or organoid arrangement of polygonal tumour cells separated by fibrovascular septa. A specific fusion gene [ASPS critical region 1 (ASPSCR1)-TFE3] was detected in ASPS. Despite being a slow-growing tumour without pain and dysfunction, ASPS is characterized by early metastasis, which leads to poor prognosis.

Effects of exercise training on physical activity in heart failure patients treated with cardiac resynchronization therapy devices or implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

Objective: This study elucidated the effects of exercise training on physical activity, 6-min walk distance, and all-cause hospitalization rates in patients with chronic heart failure, and evaluated factors contributing to changes in physical activity.

Design: Prospective cohort observational study.

Patients And Methods: Patients (n =62) who completed an exercise training programme after implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy treatment between May 2017 and May 2018 were included.

Neuropeptide Y modulates membrane excitability in neonatal rat mesencephalic V neurons.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is one of a number of neuropeptides with powerful orexigenic effects. Intracerebroventricular administration of NPY induces increases in food intake and alters feeding rate. Besides it role in feeding behavior, NPY also has significant effects on neuronal systems related to other spontaneous behaviors such as rearing and grooming.

Serotonergic modulation of slow inward rectification in mesencephalic trigeminal neurons.

Inward rectification in response to membrane hyperpolarization is a prominent feature of mesencephalic trigeminal (Mes V) neurons and the hyperpolarization-activated inward current (I), as the basis of this property, regulates the spike discharge characteristics and input frequency preference (resonance) in these neurons, suggesting that I modulation is an important regulator of oral motor activity. To examine a possible contribution of serotonin (5-HT) to the modulation of I activation characteristics, in the present study, we investigated the modulatory effects of 5-HT receptor activation on I in postnatal day (P) 2-12 rat Mes V neurons by whole-cell patch-clamp recording. Bath application of 5-HT suppressed the I-dependent voltage sag and I conductance, but induced only a modest shift in the voltage dependence of I activation.

Effect of Exercise Training in Heart Failure Patients Without Echocardiographic Response to Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment of heart failure (HF) with ventricular dyssynchrony, but not all patients respond to a similar extent. We investigated the efficacy and safety of exercise training (ET) in patients without response to CRT. Thirty-four patients who participated in a 3-month ET program and underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing at baseline and after the program were divided into 17 responders and 17 non-responders based on echocardiographic response criteria: either an increase in ejection fraction (EF) ≥10% or a reduction in left ventricular (LV) end-systolic volume ≥10%.

Potent apoptosis-inducing activity of erypoegin K, an isoflavone isolated from Erythrina poeppigiana, against human leukemia HL-60 cells.

Erypoegin K is an isoflavone isolated from the stem bark of Erythrina poeppigiana. It contains a furan group at the A-ring of the core isoflavone structure and can inhibit the activity of glyoxalase I, an enzyme that catalyzes the detoxification of methylglyoxal (MG), a by-product of glycolysis. In the present study, we found that erypoegin K has a potent cytotoxic effect on human leukemia HL-60 cells.

Cytokine expression profiles in the sera of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients.

We focused on the interaction of cytokines in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and determined the expression profile of multiple cytokines in the serum of each patient with SCC in the present study. Serum samples were obtained from 12 SCC patients and 7 normal subjects. Four cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-6, GM-CSF, and TGF-β) were selected because they are reported to be involved in keratinocyte proliferation and SCC progression.

Inhibitory Effect of Isoflavones from Erythrina poeppigiana on the Growth of HL-60 Human Leukemia Cells through Inhibition of Glyoxalase I.

It has been reported that many malignant human tissues, including breast, colon, and lung cancers, may show an elevated expression of glyoxalase I (GLO I). GLO I catalyzes the reaction to transform hemimercaptal, a compound formed from methylglyoxal (MG) and reduced glutathione, into S-D-lactoylglutathione, which is then converted to D-lactic acid by glyoxalase II. GLO I inhibitors are expected to be useful for inhibiting tumorigenesis through the accumulation of apoptosis-inducible MG in tumor cells.

Enhanced CCR9 expression levels in psoriatic skin are associated with poor clinical outcome to infliximab treatment.

Infliximab is an anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α antibody drug that suppresses TNF-α and its associated inflammatory responses. Although infliximab therapy generally results in a 75% or greater improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index from baseline in psoriasis patients, there is the heterogeneity of therapeutic efficacy in psoriasis patients among patients of a similar PASI baseline score. However, there are few published reports about the predictors of the clinical response among psoriasis patients who undergo biologic therapies.
