Background: The efficacy of anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often compromised by the development of antidrug antibodies. In this setting, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQA1*05 allele has been significantly associated with the formation of antidrug antibodies to anti-TNF agents, loss of response, and treatment discontinuation.

Objectives: We aimed to determine whether HLA-DQA1*05 genotyping is associated with clinically meaningful outcomes in patients with IBD.

Objectives The prevalence of pediatric pain, either related to the child's hospital visit or because of diagnostic and/or therapeutical interventions, is of primordial importance in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs). In this study, we evaluate the evolution of pain assessment and management in Portuguese PEDs over 11 years. Methods We prepared a questionnaire addressed to head physicians of 45 Portuguese PEDs in 2007 and statistically compared the responses to those provided in 2018, where we also posed these questions to nurse managers.

RNA interference (RNAi) techniques have been widely applied in insect pest control and genomics research, effectively targeting genes in tissues like salivary glands and the midgut in Triatominae. This study evaluated the efficacy of topical application as a delivery method for dsRNA targeting Rhodnius prolixus salivary genes, Nitrophorin 2 (NP2), and Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS). Applying dsRNA diluted in acetone (1:1) to the dorsal side of nymphs successfully triggered RNAi, achieving transstadial mRNA reduction while preserving dsRNA integrity.

This study presents a framework to automatically analyse head motion in birds from videos of natural behaviours. The process involves detecting birds, identifying key points on their heads and tracking changes in their positions over time. Bird detection and key point extraction were trained on publicly available datasets, featuring videos and images of diverse bird species in uncontrolled settings.

The coexistence of parasellar meningiomas and anterior circulation aneurysms is rare, and their anatomical proximity complicates diagnosis and treatment, making management challenging and risky. This study aims to assess the literature on the treatment strategies, clinical-surgical outcomes, and complications in such complex cases. We searched Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases following PRISMA guidelines for studies reporting clinical and/or surgical outcomes related to concomitant parasellar meningiomas and anterior circulation aneurysms.

Given the importance of new renewable resources for the industrial sector, this study aimed to assess the innovative technological and biological properties of galactomannans derived from the seeds of Adenanthera pavonina (BioAp), Caesalpinia pulcherrima (BioCp), and Delonix regia (BioDr). The biopolymers were evaluated using various parameters, including texture, spreadability, cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, antimicrobial assays, mucoadhesiveness, and irritation potential by HET-CAM test. The absence of cytotoxicity, hemolysis, and irritation showed the potential of the three biopolymers for applications in biomedical fields.

Rhipicephalus microplus poses a significant challenge to animal health. This study evaluated efficacy and the effective operational cost (EOC) of different acaricidal treatments varying droplet size, pressure and spray pattern using a power sprayer. Three experiments were conducted on dairy cows, with each experiment involving three groups of 10 animals: two treated groups and one untreated control group.

Peripheral nerve injuries, such as axonal injury of the superior gluteal nerve, are rare but debilitating complications that can occur after hip arthroplasty. This case report describes the use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat an axonal injury of the superior gluteal nerve in a 71-year-old patient. After conventional rehabilitation failed, MSC infiltration was chosen and performed with ultrasound (US) guidance.

Hypercanines, or hypertrophied canines, are observed in a wide range of both extinct and extant synapsids. In non-mammaliaform cynodonts, the Permo-Triassic forerunners of mammals, long canines are not uncommon, appearing in several unrelated taxa within the clade. Among them is Trucidocynodon riograndensis, a carnivorous ecteniniid cynodont from the Late Triassic of Brazil, which exhibits a specialized dentition, including spear-shaped incisors, very long and narrow canines, and sectorial postcanines with distally oriented cusps, all of which have finely serrated margins.

Introduction: Although the oral cavity and the gut are anatomically continuous regions of the gastrointestinal tract, research on the relationship between oral and gut microbiota remains sparse. Oral-gut bacterial translocation is mostly studied in pathological contexts, thus evidence of translocation in healthy conditions is still scarce. Studying the oral-gut microbiota relationship in humans in different life stages is necessary in order to understand how these microbial communities might relate throughout life.

Unlabelled: This article presents a series of three complex forensic cases that posed significant challenges for identifying human remains. These include a mass dam disaster, burnt human remains, and extensively decomposed human remains. Positive identification was achieved using a shadow positioning technique with imaging comparisons of medical findings.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) self-monitor their conditions and their willingness to use digital health applications (DHAs) for better self-management.
  • - Results from a survey of 228 patients showed that while 78% were willing to use DHAs, 64% rarely or never tracked their symptoms, often due to a stable condition or perceived lack of value.
  • - The research highlights the need for improved patient engagement strategies and passive monitoring techniques in the development of DHAs to enhance effective disease self-care.

Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) are very common and can negatively impact patients' quality of life. The current care of patients with RMDs is episodic, based on a few yearly doctor visits, which may not provide an adequate picture of the patient's condition. Researchers have hypothesized that RMDs could be passively monitored using smartphones or sensors, however, there are no datasets to support this development.

Rhipicephalus microplus is among the most important ectoparasites for livestock. The use of synthetic acaricides has raised some concerns due to the selection of tick populations that are resistant to acaricides and environmental contamination. Therefore, plant extracts have been used as alternatives for the treatment of animals infested with ticks.

Amblyomma sculptum is widely distributed in Brazil and is the main vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of the Brazilian spotted fever (BSF). Tick gut proteins play an essential role in blood feeding, digestion, and protection of gut epithelium. Therefore, many of these were investigated as potential vaccine targets for tick-control strategies.

SH-SY5Y is a human neuroblastoma cell line that can be differentiated into several neuronal phenotypes, depending on culture conditions. For this reason, this cell line has been widely used as an in vitro model of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). However, most studies published to date used fetal bovine serum (FBS) as culture medium supplement for SH-SY5Y cell differentiation.

Introduction And Objectives: Diabetes, dyslipidemia, older age, gender, urinary tract infections, and recent antibiotic intake have been associated with a decrease in the urobiome richness and other fluctuations in this microbiome. Gut and blood microbiome have been reported to be altered in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and specifically in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Still, there are currently no studies describing the urogenital microbiome in CKD-PD patients.
