Tobacco smoking during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes like low birth weight. This study determined changes in the circulating metabolome linked to maternal smoking in the first trimester and correlated these changes to the growth of the foetus. The circulating metabolome was examined from first trimester plasma samples by non-targeted (global) liquid chromatography mass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling of 227 pregnant women (99 smokers and 117 non-smokers) from the Kuopio Birth Cohort Study.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccording to existing food processing classification systems, plant-based protein-rich (PBPR) foods are often considered 'ultra-processed'-and therefore perceived as unhealthy-despite their ability to provide various bioactive compounds beneficial for human health. Here we used a non-targeted metabolomics approach to analyse the impact of processing on the biochemical composition of PBPR foods. Our results show that existing food classification systems may provide questionable categories for PBPR foods without considering their overall biochemical composition, including phytochemicals.

5-Aminovaleric acid betaine (5-AVAB) is a trimethylated compound associated with the gut microbiota, potentially produced endogenously, and related to the dietary intake of certain foods such as whole grains. 5-AVAB accumulates within the metabolically active tissues and has been typically found in higher concentrations in the heart, muscle, and brown adipose tissue. Furthermore, 5-AVAB has been associated with positive health effects such as fetal brain development, insulin secretion, and reduced cancer risk.
