Lithium-ion batteries are pivotal for modern energy storage, yet accurately predicting their lifespan remains a critical challenge. While descriptors like coulombic efficiency are widely used to assess battery longevity, the unclear physical origins of coulombic losses cause semi-quantitative correlation with capacity, complicating battery development. Here, we combine high-precision leakage current and open-circuit-voltage measurements with charge conservation principles to explore microscopic charge consumptions at electrode-electrolyte interfaces across diverse chemistries.

Apple and stone fruit trees are vital components of Ontario's agricultural landscape. However, since 2016, these trees have been facing alarming mortality rates, exhibiting symptoms collectively referred to as Fruit Tree Decline (FTD) and Rapid Apple Decline (RAD). Despite its widespread occurrence, the exact cause of FTD and RAD remains elusive, with various pathogenic fungi and viruses implicated, along with abiotic stressors such as drought, winter injury and nutrient deficiency.

The transition from meiotic divisions in the oocyte to embryonic mitoses is a critical step in animal development. Despite negligible changes to cell size and shape, following fertilization the small, barrel-shaped meiotic spindle is replaced by a large zygotic spindle that nucleates abundant astral microtubules at spindle poles. To probe underlying mechanisms, we applied a drug treatment approach using Ciona eggs and found that inhibition of casein kinase 2 (CK2) caused a shift from meiotic to mitotic-like spindle morphology with nucleation of robust astral microtubules, an effect reproduced in Xenopus egg cytoplasmic extracts.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with a complex etiology, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is considered the leading cause. While understanding the role of EBV infection in the pathogenesis of MS in human subjects is crucial, animal models, particularly nonhuman primates (NHPs), would provide an ideal controlled environment for testing EBV hypotheses and identifying potential therapeutic targets. Here in this Review we address clinically relevant questions regarding the link between EBV infection and MS to inform the development and refinement of virally induced NHP models.

Background: Salt stress is a significant challenge that disrupts soybean growth, development, yield, and quality. A few DREB genes in the soybean have been reported to activate downstream genes in response to abiotic stresses; however, the functions of many soybean DREB, including DREB5, remain uncharacterized. This study aimed to determine the expression of the GmDREB5 and its effects on the transcription of the NtP5CS and NtSODFe in tobacco's response to salt stress.

Ionic liquids (ILs) for electrochemical, nuclear, and solar energy applications operate under harsh conditions, where electrons and transient radical species can form. This communication discusses why anions such as bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TfN) are reduced at the electron-rich electrode whereas in laser photoionization or pulse radiolysis studies, where electrons are ejected from species in the bulk, we often detect long-lived electrons in cavities that interact with IL cations instead. This work argues that bulk excess electrons generated photolytically or radiolytically follow kinetically favored pathways.

In the field of crack mechanics, predicting the direction of a crack is important because this will evaluate whether, when the crack propagates, it penetrates into important areas and whether the structure is dangerous or not. This paper will refer to three theories that predict the propagation direction of cracks: a theory of maximum tangential normal stress, a theory of maximum energy release, and a theory of minimum strain energy density. At the same time, the finite element method (FEM)-ANSYS program will be used to calculate stress intensity factors (SIFs), strain energy release rate (J-integral), stress field, displacement near a crack tip, and crack propagation phenomenon based on the above theories.
