In classic Hodgkin-lymphoma (cHL), only a few cases recur, and only a limited fraction of patients is primary-refractory to standard-polychemotherapy. Underlying genomic features of unfavorable clinical courses remain sparsely characterized. Here, we investigated the genomic characteristics of primary-refractory/relapsed cHL in contrast with responders.

Comparison of the Effective Radiation Dose in the Region of the Facial Skull Between Multidetector CT, Dental Conebeam CT and Intraoperative 3D C-Arms.

Study Design: Experimental single-centre study of X-ray absorption using a phantom skull.

Objective: This experimental study aimed to compare the radiation doses of different 3D imaging devices used in maxillofacial surgery, including one Multidetector CT (MDCT), two Conebeam CT (CBCT) and four intraoperative 3D C-arms.

Methods: Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) were used to determine the absorbed radiation in an Alderson-Rando phantom skull.

Thyroid scintigraphy: establishing a clinically useful normal range for 99mTc pertechnetate uptake.

Purpose: This study aims to establish a normal range for the thyroid uptake derived from Tc pertechnetate scans. In particular, variations of uptake with TSH stimulation and other factors such as urinary iodine concentration are taken into account and compared with the calculation of a raw uptake value.

Methods: Clinical multicentric (center A, B and C) prospective study on 125 consecutive healthy patients undergoing thyroid scans for thyroid nodules.

Background: Injury patterns in the area of the extremities following violence and war harbor many special features and require special attention. Destructive and complex defect injuries are often present, which necessitate elaborate and special reconstruction approaches, predominantly as part of a staged and multistaged procedure.

Research Question: In this context, special attention must be paid to the diagnostic options as an essential aspect, as a clear diagnosis means that targeted treatment steps can be planned and implemented.

Late Onset of Primary Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) with a Novel Constellation of Compound Heterozygosity Involving Two Missense Variants in the Gene.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare but in most cases life-threatening immune-mediated disease of the hematopoietic system frequently associated with hematologic neoplasms. Here, we report on a case in which we detected a novel constellation of two missense variants affecting the gene, leading to de novo primary HLH. Diagnostics included a comprehensive clinical work-up and standard methods of hematopathology as well as extended molecular genomics based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reactions and the calculation of three-dimensional molecule reconstructions of .

Correct and Incorrect Recommendations for or against Fine Needle Biopsies of Hypofunctioning Thyroid Nodules: Performance of Different Ultrasound-based Risk Stratification Systems.

Purpose:  To evaluate the recommendations for or against fine needle biopsy (FNB) of hypofunctioning thyroid nodules (TNs) using of five different Ultrasound (US) -based risk stratification systems (RSSs).

Methods:  German multicenter study with 563 TNs (≥ 10 mm) in 534 patients who underwent thyroid US and surgery. All TNs were evaluated with ACR TI-RADS, EU-TIRADS, ATA, K-TIRADS 2016 and modified K-TIRADS 2021.

Personalized [177Lu]Lutetium-PSMA Therapy for Patients with Pre-Treated Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: A Single Institution Experience from a Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is characterized by an aggressive biological behavior with a relatively short survival time, especially in progressive tumors pretreated with new hormonal agents and taxane chemotherapy. [177Lu]-Lutetium-PSMA (Lu-PSMA) treatment has proven efficacy in these patients. However, around 30% of the CRPC patients do not benefit from Lu-PSMA treatment, and little is known about predictive factors for treatment success if Lu-PSMA is offered in an individualized approach based on clinical and laboratory features.

The aim of this study was to examine the current frequencies of hyper-, hypo- and isofunctioning TNs in Germany and to estimate the risk of malignancy with regard to functional status.

Radiation doses from low-dose CT scans in SPECT/CT and PET/CT examinations: A survey in Germany.

Aim: Recently, dose reference levels (DRLs) have been defined in Germany for auxiliary low-dose CT scans in hybrid SPECT/CT and PET/CT examinations, based on data from 2016/17. Here, another survey from 2020 was evaluated and compared with the new DRLs as well as with similar surveys from foreign countries.

Methods: The survey, which had already been conducted in the Nordic countries, queried for various examinations including the following values: patient weight and height, volume CT dose index (CTDI), dose length product (DLP).

Diagnostic Performance of Kwak, EU, ACR, and Korean TIRADS as Well as ATA Guidelines for the Ultrasound Risk Stratification of Non-Autonomously Functioning Thyroid Nodules in a Region with Long History of Iodine Deficiency: A German Multicenter Trial.

Germany has a long history of insufficient iodine supply and thyroid nodules occur in over 30% of the adult population, the vast majority of which are benign. Non-invasive diagnostics remain challenging, and ultrasound-based risk stratification systems are essential for selecting lesions requiring further clarification. However, no recommendation can yet be made about which system performs the best for iodine deficiency areas.

What Animal Cancers teach us about Human Biology.

Cancers in animals present a large, underutilized reservoir of biomedical information with critical implication for human oncology and medicine in general. Discussing two distinct areas of tumour biology in non-human hosts, we highlight the importance of these findings for our current understanding of cancer, before proposing a coordinated strategy to harvest biomedical information from non-human resources and translate it into a clinical setting. First, infectious cancers that can be transmitted as allografts between individual hosts, have been identified in four distinct, unrelated groups, dogs, Tasmanian devils, Syrian hamsters and, surprisingly, marine bivalves.

Compare and contrast: pediatric cancer versus adult malignancies.

Cancer is a leading cause of death in both adults and children, but in terms of absolute numbers, pediatric cancer is a relatively rare disease. The rarity of pediatric cancer is consistent with our current understanding of how adult malignancies form, emphasizing the view of cancer as a genetic disease caused by the accumulation and selection of unrepaired mutations over time. However, considering those children who develop cancer merely as stochastically "unlucky" does not fully explain the underlying aetiology, which is distinct from that observed in adults.

Inhibition of PI3K signalling increases the efficiency of radiotherapy in glioblastoma cells.

Glioblastoma, the most common primary brain tumour, is also considered one of the most lethal cancers per se. It is highly refractory to therapeutic intervention, as highlighted by the mean patient survival of only 15 months, despite an aggressive treatment approach, consisting of maximal safe surgical resection, followed by radio- and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy, in particular, can have effects on the surviving fractions of tumour cells, which are considered adverse to the desired clinical outcome: It can induce increased cellular proliferation, as well as enhanced invasion.

Radiation and Brain Tumors: An Overview.

The use of radiation is an essential part of both modern cancer diagnostic assessment and treatment. Next-generation imaging devices create 3D visualizations, allowing for better diagnoses and improved planning of precision treatment. This is particularly important for primary brain cancers such as diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma or the most common primary brain tumor, glioblastoma, because radiotherapy is often the only treatment modality that offers a significant improvement in survival and quality of life.

Overview of recent advances in phosphorus recovery for fertilizer production.

This Mini Review gives an overview of and respective references for the current situation regarding global phosphorus reserves and the legal situation for P recovery using Germany as the model. Apart from the well-known pilot up to industrial/full scale recovery techniques, emerging chemical and bio-based P recovery techniques are named without claiming to be all-encompassing. Special attention is paid to the biological systems for P recovery that reveal ways for use of renewable resources as raw materials.

Cell death-based treatment of childhood cancer.

Any therapy that aims at eradicating a cancerous growth will have at its core a cell death-inducing component. Here we argue that paediatric oncology presents with its unique set of considerations and problems, which-while taking the lead from oncological research experiences obtained from the adult population-need to be clinically evaluated independently. This is particularly true when considering long-term side effects.

Frequency and nature of incidental extra-enteric lesions found on magnetic resonance enterography (MR-E) in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of extra-enteric findings in a large cohort of patients undergoing magnetic resonance enterography (MR-E) and to classify the clinical significance of these findings.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1154 MR-E performed in 1006 patients referred to our radiological department between 1999-2005. The reasons for referral were suspected or proven inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (n = 710), further diagnostic work-up for small bowel disease because of non-specific abdominal symptoms (SBD; n = 182) or suspected small bowel malignancies (SBM; n = 114).
