Maintaining and enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils is proposed as a key practice to mitigate climate change. While there is agreement on the co-benefits of SOC accrual on other agroecosystem services, its potential trade-offs in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses are still under debate. We present a global dataset compiling the results of 232 articles that experimentally compare the effects of agricultural management practices with a potential to preserve or enhance SOC against conventional practices.

Viruses are abundant and ubiquitous in soil, but their importance in modulating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in terrestrial ecosystems remains largely unknown. Here, various loads of viral communities are introduced into paddy soils with different fertilization histories via a reciprocal transplant approach to study the role of viruses in regulating greenhouse gas emissions and prokaryotic communities. The results showed that the addition of viruses has a strong impact on methane (CH) and nitrous oxide (NO) emissions and, to a minor extent, carbon dioxide (CO) emissions, along with dissolved carbon and nitrogen pools, depending on soil fertilization history.

The influential concept of the rare biosphere in microbial ecology has underscored the importance of taxa occurring at low abundances yet potentially playing key roles in communities and ecosystems. Here, we refocus the concept of rare biosphere through a functional trait-based lens and provide a framework to characterize microbial functional rarity, a combination of numerical scarcity across space or time and trait distinctiveness. We demonstrate how this novel interpretation of the rare biosphere, rooted in microbial functions, can enhance our mechanistic understanding of microbial community structure.

Background: Microbial communities are of tremendous importance for ecosystem functioning and yet we know little about the ecological processes driving the assembly of these communities in the environment. Here, we used an unprecedented experimental approach based on the manipulation of physical distance between neighboring cells during soil colonization to determine the role of bacterial interactions in soil community assembly. We hypothesized that experimentally manipulating the physical distance between bacterial cells will modify the interaction strengths leading to differences in microbial community composition, with increasing distance between neighbors favoring poor competitors.
