Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are major causes of respiratory infections globally. Viral and bacterial co-infections are commonly observed in respiratory infections and there is evidence that these pathogens interact synergistically to evade host responses and lead to more severe disease. Notably, RSV seasonal outbreaks are associated with increased hospitalization and a subsequent peak in invasive pneumococcal disease cases, particularly in pediatric populations.

Capsular group B meningococcus (MenB) remains an important cause of disease globally, and additional vaccines against MenB would aid in reducing the incidence of infection. Previous work has demonstrated that a MenB adenoviral-vectored vaccine, ChAdOx1 MenB.1, elicited high serum bactericidal responses in preclinical models after a single dose, supporting further clinical development of this vaccine.

Background: Vaccinating women against pertussis in pregnancy protects young infants from severe disease and death. Vaccination-induced maternally derived antibodies, however, might subsequently modulate (and specifically blunt) the infant's serological response to their primary series of pertussis vaccinations. We examined the effect of pertussis immunisation in pregnancy on the immunogenicity of primary acellular or whole-cell pertussis vaccines in a west African cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis in the Iranian population aged 50 years and older through a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant research.
  • After reviewing 2117 documents, 10 studies were included, revealing a pooled prevalence of osteoporosis in various regions, with women showing higher rates than men.
  • The findings emphasize the need for effective strategies to address the increasing issues of osteoporosis, particularly among older adults, as well as the relatively lower prevalence in the femoral neck region compared to spinal osteoporosis.

Background: Severe mental illness (SMI) imposes a substantial worldwide burden of disability, highlighting the need for comprehensive and adaptable mental health services. This study aims to assess the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of community-based mental health services (CBMHS) in reducing relapse and rehospitalization rates among individuals with SMI in Iran.

Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent meta-analysis investigated the potential of circulating exosomal microRNAs (exomiRs) as non-invasive biomarkers for predicting outcomes in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients, analyzing data from 47 studies involving nearly 5,000 patients.
  • - The findings showed significant associations between both up-regulated and down-regulated exomiRs with various clinical factors like tumor differentiation, TNM stage, lymph node and distant metastasis, as well as overall and progression-free survival.
  • - The analysis indicated that the results were generally robust across different subcategories, although some associations were impacted by publication bias, particularly regarding survival outcomes linked to exomiRs.

Objective: About 30% of all nanoparticle products contain silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). With the increasing use of AgNPs in industry and medicine, concerns about the adverse effects on the environment, and the possible toxicity of these particles to primary cells and towards organs such as the brain and nervous system increased. In this paper, the toxicity of AgNPs in neurons and brain of animal models was investigated by a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Sitagliptin is known as an antidiabetic agent inhibiting the dipeptidyl peptidase-4. Although sitagliptin may influence weight, controversial results have been reported, and there is no general agreement on this issue. Therefore, this study assessed the effect of sitagliptin as monotherapy and add-on therapy to metformin on weight reduction in overweight or obese cases with type 2 diabetes.

  • Osteosarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome affecting muscle and bone health, increasing morbidity and mortality among older adults, especially those aged 60 and above.
  • A study involving 2,353 participants assessed the prevalence of osteosarcopenia and found rates of 33.8% in men and 33.9% in women, with body mass index inversely associated with the syndrome.
  • The study noted that high-fat mass correlated positively with osteosarcopenia, while physical activity was inversely related in men, and diabetes had a direct association in men as well.
