Article Synopsis
  • The study explored a new chest tube placement technique using the sternum, aiming to lower the risk of misplacement and complications in chest trauma patients.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 184 patients treated at a Korean trauma center, comparing traditional methods of tube placement to the sternum-based method using CT scans.
  • Findings suggested that the sternum method provides higher accuracy in ensuring that the tube does not pass the diaphragm, leading to a more effective and safer thoracostomy approach.

The biology of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in young patients is poorly understood, and there are conflicting data regarding the recurrence for younger patients compared to older patients. We retrospectively analyzed 2348 clinically node-negative (cN0) PTC patients who underwent a thyroid lobectomy between 2008 and 2017. Young age was defined as less than 35 years old.

Background: Although saline is commonly used during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or post-cardiac arrest care, it has detrimental effects. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a balanced crystalloid solution (Plasma Solution-A [PS]) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients and compare it with the efficacy of saline.

Methods: A randomized, unblinded clinical trial was conducted using PS and saline for intravenous fluid administration during CPR and post-cardiac arrest care of non-traumatic OHCA patients admitted to the emergency department of a tertiary university hospital.

Background/aim: Many studies indicate that multifocality is associated with high-risk features of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Herein, we evaluated the impact of the unilateral multifocality on post-lobectomy recurrence in patients with DTC.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1,684 patients with DTC who underwent thyroid lobectomy from 2008 to 2015 using logistic regression models to calculate the relative risk on post-lobectomy recurrence.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the characteristics of patients injured by high-rotation cutting tools and the factors related to the severity of their injuries.

Methods: Adult patients (≥18 years), who presented to the emergency department (ED) after a high-rotation cutting tool injury and who were registered in the Korean Emergency Department-based Injury In-depth Surveillance (2011-2018) database, were included. Patients' demographic characteristics, injury-related factors, and Injury Severity Scores were collected.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the occurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in trauma patients in Korea by using computed tomographic angiography (CTA).
  • Out of 7,634 patients admitted to an emergency department, 278 underwent CTA, with a VTE diagnosis rate of 43.2% among these patients.
  • Results indicated that patients with severe head and neck injuries were significantly more likely to develop VTE compared to those with nonsevere injuries, highlighting the need for doctors to prioritize CTA in these high-risk patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) outcomes before and after implementation of Smart Advanced Life Support (SALS) protocol incorporating changes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) assistance and coaching by physicians via real-time video calls.

Methods: A prospective before-and-after multi-regional observational study was conducted between January 2014 and December 2018. In January 2016, emergency medical service (EMS) providers adopted an integrated CPR coaching by physicians via real-time video call via SALS to treat patients with OHCA focusing on high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

In this study, a numerical and experimental investigation of the quasi-static crushing behavior of steel tubular structures was conducted. As the crushing failure behavior involves a high level of nonlinearity for the numerical simulations, these were compared with previous experimental works, including crushing tests of steel square tubes to calibrate the numerical results. Six parameters for the numerical simulations, namely (1) loading boundary condition, (2) geometrical imperfection, (3) friction coefficient, (4) element size, (5) element type, and (6) material nonlinearity model, were examined using a series of finite element analyses.

Background/aim: Thyroid lobectomy may cause post-lobectomy hypothyroidism. We investigated the difference in levothyroxine (LT4) supplementation and cessation between patients with benign disease and those with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and found that the rate of LT4 cessation could be decreased after thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression in PTC.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 88 patients with benign tumor and 463 patients with PTC and investigated the risk factors for LT4 supplementation after thyroid lobectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers engineered a woody bioenergy crop by using a specific gene expression strategy to enhance growth and biomass properties through the combination of two genes, PtrMYB3 and PdGA20ox1.
  • The transgenic plants demonstrated substantial increases in weight and growth metrics compared to wild-type plants, with Arabidopsis showing threefold increases in stem weight and poplars showing up to 2.6-fold increases in greenhouse conditions.
  • Overall, the transgenic poplars exhibited enhanced wood formation and quality, making them promising candidates for biofuel production despite no significant changes in secondary wall thickness.

Both anthocyanins and lignins are essential secondary metabolites in plant growth and development. Their biosynthesis is metabolically interconnected and diverges in the central metabolite 4-coumaroyl CoA of the phenylpropanoid pathway. Considerable progress has been made in understanding transcriptional regulation of genes involved in lignin and anthocyanin synthesis pathways, but the concerted regulation of these pathways is not yet fully understood.

Although conifers have significant ecological and economic value, information on transcriptional regulation of wood formation in conifers is still limited. Here, to gain insight into secondary cell wall (SCW) biosynthesis and tracheid formation in conifers, we performed wood tissue-specific transcriptome analyses of Pinus densiflora (Korean red pine) using RNA sequencing. In addition, to obtain full-length transcriptome information, PacBio single molecule real-time iso-sequencing was carried out using RNAs from 28 tissues of P.

Drought stress is one of the major environmental problems in the growth of crops and woody perennials, but it is getting worse due to the global climate crisis. XERICO, a RING (Really Interesting New Gene) zinc-finger E3 ubiquitin ligase, has been shown to be a positive regulator of drought tolerance in plants through the control of abscisic acid (ABA) homeostasis. We characterized a poplar () RING protein family and identified the closest homolog of called .
