Objective: To evaluate the performance of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in vanishing-twin and multiple pregnancies.

Methods: This study was conducted as part of the TRIDENT-2 study, in which NIPT was offered as a first-tier screening test to women with a multiple pregnancy or vanishing-twin pregnancy between 1 June 2020 and 31 March 2023 in The Netherlands. Abnormal NIPT results were investigated by follow-up invasive prenatal testing and/or postnatal genetic testing.

Article Synopsis
  • Early risk assessment in pregnancy can help prevent serious issues like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes by identifying at-risk mothers early on.
  • This study reviewed 77 articles on first-trimester prediction models focused on maternal characteristics, excluding those using biochemical or ultrasound data, and found varied effectiveness in predicting outcomes.
  • Many of the models showed a high risk of bias, and there’s a need for better validation processes, indicating that while tools exist, their reliability and clinical use must be improved.

Article Synopsis
  • New EU policies post-2020 focus on soil conservation, influenced by the CAP 2023-2027, a proposed Soil Monitoring Law, and the 'A Soil Deal for Europe' mission.
  • Over 330 participants from 63 countries attended a 2022 EU Soil Observatory workshop on soil erosion, discussing key topics such as management practices and nutrient cycles.
  • The follow-up resulted in 15 manuscripts, with 9 selected for publication, highlighting challenges in soil erosion research amid the EU Green Deal's aims.

Article Synopsis
  • The effectiveness of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in pregnancies with vanishing twins (VT) is not well understood, prompting a systematic review of existing literature.
  • Seven studies were included, revealing low screen positive rates for trisomy 21 (2.2%), trisomy 18 (0.91%), and trisomy 13 (0.44%), along with variably low positive predictive values (PPV).
  • Despite some success in detecting common aneuploidies, the findings indicate a higher false positive rate for NIPT in VT pregnancies, highlighting the need for further research to improve its accuracy and determine the best timing for testing.

Climate change will strongly affect essential ecosystem services, like the provision of freshwater, food production, soil erosion and flood control. Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices are increasingly promoted to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, but there is lack of evidence at scales most relevant for policymaking. We evaluated the effectiveness of SLM in a large Mediterranean catchment where climate change is projected to significantly reduce water security.
