In patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), overlapping non-gastrointestinal conditions such as fibromyalgia, headaches, gynaecological and urological conditions, sleep disturbances and fatigue are common, as is overlap among DGBI in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract. These overlaps strongly influence patient management and outcome. Shared pathophysiology could explain this scenario, but details are not fully understood.

Introduction: Chronic nausea and vomiting are symptoms of a wide range of gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal conditions. Diagnosis can be challenging and requires a systematic and well-structured approach. If the initial investigation for structural, toxic and metabolic disorders is negative, digestive motility and gut-brain interaction disorders should be assessed.

An allergic reaction to infections with Aspergillus fumigatus causes allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). This response often can worsen underlying symptoms of previously well-controlled diseases, such as asthma or cystic fibrosis. Due to the nature of the symptoms, patients with ABPA are often regarded as just having worsening asthma control or are treated for a different disease entirely.

Background: A high prevalence of disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) exist in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). However, it is unknown if clusters of hEDS/HSD patients exist which overlap with different DGBIs and whether this overlap influences presence of comorbidities and quality of life. We aimed to study these knowledge gaps.

Article Synopsis
  • Chest radiotherapy (C-XRT) can lead to complications such as aortic stenosis, which often necessitates transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), but data on outcomes for C-XRT survivors are limited.
  • A national inpatient study from 2016 to 2020 identified 515 patients with a history of C-XRT who underwent TAVR, comparing their outcomes to matched controls without C-XRT.
  • The results indicated that C-XRT patients had lower in-hospital mortality, shorter hospital stays, reduced total charges, and fewer complications, highlighting a potential advantage in TAVR outcomes for these patients.
