Objective: To investigate, through immunohistochemistry, the interaction between epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the immune checkpoint proteins PD-1 and PD-L1 in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC).

Design: The EMT status was determined based on the immunostaining of E-cadherin and N-cadherin proteins. EMT status and the immunoexpression of PD-L1 and PD-1 were analyzed semiquantitatively in 61 cases of OTSCC, and the cases were categorized into low and high expression groups for association with clinicopathological variables and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of the virtual assistant "Syndromic Diseases and Orofacial Features" (SDOF), developed based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 model, in formulating diagnostic hypotheses and recommendations for syndromes with orofacial manifestations.

Study Design: Twenty-six anonymized, previously diagnosed clinical cases, including clinical features and images, were selected. The assistant was trained using scientific references and configured to generate diagnostic hypotheses and suggest complementary exams.

Small cell osteosarcoma (SCOS) is a rare variant of conventional osteosarcoma, characterized by tumor cells of small size and uniform morphology, which can lead to diagnostic confusion with other small cell tumors, requiring a detailed diagnostic approach. The manifestation in a child adds a degree of complexity, as the management of malignant tumours in paediatric patients requires specific considerations to minimize the long-term side effects of oncological treatment and preserve the structural and functional development of the orofacial region. This report concerns an 8-year-old female patient referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery outpatient clinic with progressive swelling in the right maxillofacial region, initially asymptomatic, but progressing to pain and difficulty chewing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the characteristics of oral reactions to injectable soft tissue fillers, focusing on 151 patients, predominantly females averaging 54.9 years old.
  • Most reactions occurred about 20.4 months after injection, often presenting as painless nodules in the lips, with silicone and polymethylmetacrylate being the most common fillers used.
  • Key findings showed differences in reaction patterns based on the type of filler and highlighted the importance for clinicians to recognize these potential reactions when assessing asymptomatic nodules in older female patients.

Introduction: Cleft lip and/or palate (CL+/-P) is a congenital malformation affecting the lip and palate, requiring long-term treatment due to potential associated complications. For this reason, it is important for the patient to be continuously monitored and followed for health promotion and prevention, as well as improving the quality of life. The aim of this scoping review protocol is to identify and map the available evidence regarding the application of digital resources and technologies in the monitoring and follow-up of patients with CL+/-P.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral lymphatic malformations are rare lesions, with only 17 cases identified out of 7554 oral lesions studied in a Brazilian oral pathology service from 2000 to 2021.
  • The average age of affected patients was 16.5 years, with the tongue being the most common site (76%), and the lesions often presented as reddish, nodular swellings, with 29% being asymptomatic.
  • The study found that clinical and histopathological diagnoses were consistent for most cases, and excisional biopsy was performed in 41% of the lesions.

Primary intraosseous oral squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm that affects the jaws. Despite its aggressive biological behavior, there are no studies that evaluated the clinicopathological features of this tumor and parameters associated with its prognosis. The objective of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of the available data on oral and maxillofacial PIOSCC in order to determine its clinicopathological characteristics and biological behavior.
