Ocular vs neurosyphilis. are they the same? A guide to investigation and management.

This article reviews key concepts in the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and management of ocular syphilis. It is not a systematic review or meta-analysis, but highlights the critical clinical features and investigations in patients with ocular syphilis. It reviews the overlap and interplay between ocular and neuro syphilis and provides practical guidance to diagnose and manage patients with ocular syphilis.

PREDICTIVE FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH ANATOMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES AFTER PANRETINAL PHOTOCOAGULATION IN PEOPLE WITH PROLIFERATIVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY.

Purpose: To determine effects of baseline characteristics and laser type performed on outcomes in people with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) undergoing panretinal photocoagulation (PRP).

Methods: Medical records of all consecutive patients with PDR naïve to PRP, identified using an electronic database, evaluated at the Macula Clinic, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, receiving their first PRP between January 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017, and followed for a minimum of 6 months after stabilization of PDR, were retrospectively reviewed. Outcomes included time to stabilization after PRP, progression of PDR, and mean change in the best-corrected visual acuity from baseline to the last follow-up.

OBSERVED COMPLICATIONS FROM DEXAMETHASONE INTRAVITREAL IMPLANT FOR THE TREATMENT OF MACULAR EDEMA IN RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION OVER 3 TREATMENT ROUNDS.

Purpose: To report adverse events after treatment of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion with intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI) in a UK center across three treatment rounds.

Methods: A review of 61 eyes receiving IDI treatment (1 implant [n = 61], 2 implants [n = 17], 3 implants [n = 6]). Data were collected at initiation and 2 and 6 months.

OCT imaging of a traumatic endothelial ring.

Purpose: To report a case of a traumatic corneal endothelial ring sustained from a nonblast injury and its resolution with corneal optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.

Methods: The authors present a report of the clinical case with imaging of the lesion using corneal OCT.

Results: A 59-year-old man presented 1 day after sustaining a nonpenetrating foreign body injury to his cornea.
