To evaluate the efficacy of a human amniotic membrane patch to treat optic disc pit maculopathy. Three cases are presented. Three patients with optic disc pit maculopathy were treated with pars plana vitrectomy and a human amniotic membrane patch of the optic disc pit.

Background: Emerging infectious Diseases have affected many Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) countries in the past two decades, leading to outbreaks and considerable increases in mortality rates. In addition, fragmented or destroyed health care infrastructure due to ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, weak governance and regulatory capacity, including poor infection prevention and control measures, and a lack of access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene exacerbate this region's vulnerability to health threats like antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This document aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress, challenges, and recommendations for implementing the One Health approach in the EMR.

Assessing Alzheimer's disease knowledge among Egyptian medical students in the context of recent educational reforms.

Background: Medical students are the future doctors and play an essential role in the management of health issues. Their understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is not only required but also necessary to provide the best possible care to patients. The present study aimed to assess medical students' knowledge about AD within the context of the recent reform of the Egyptian medical educational system, which switched to competency-based instead of outcome-based education since 2017.

Prevalence and determinants of depression and anxiety among Sudanese during the ongoing civil conflicts: A cross-sectional study.

Armed conflicts have profound effects on mental health, including elevated rates of depression and anxiety among affected populations. The ongoing civil conflict in Sudan since April 2023 has exacerbated these challenges. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify the determinants of depression and anxiety among Sudanese residents affected by the ongoing civil conflict.

Gore-Tex Suture-Associated Endophthalmitis in a Young Patient.

Gore-Tex sutures are commonly used for scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOL) due to their high tensile strength and lower risk of breakage. However, complications such as suture erosion and infection remain a concern. This report presents a case of Gore-Tex suture-associated endophthalmitis in a young patient.

Assessment of post-traumatic stress disorder and well-being among Sudanese during the ongoing war: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Wars profoundly impact mental health with growing long lasting consequences. This study assessed the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and well-being among Sudanese affected by the ongoing conflict, with a specific focus on healthcare workers (HCWs).

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April 1 and June 30, 2024, using the validated Arabic versions of PTSD Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) (PCL-5) and the World Health Organization (WHO)-5 Well-Being Index.

Clinicopathological Characteristics of Thyroid Cancer: A 10-Year Experience at a Tertiary Care Center in Saudi Arabia.

Background Thyroid nodules are typically an initial sign of thyroid cancer (TC) and require evaluation by thyroid ultrasonography. Additional measures, such as fine needle aspiration, may be necessary depending on the level of malignancy risk. This study aims to comprehensively analyze TC clinical, radiological, and histopathological characteristics in a cohort of Saudi patients.

Background: Self-efficacy is a popular psychological concept that refers to an individual's perception or belief in his ability to perform specific actions. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of self-efficacy, measured using the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale (SEM6S) questionnaire, for diabetes management and overall well-being in patients with diabetes.

Subject And Methods: An anonymous online cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the self-efficacy of diabetic patients in the Asser region of Saudi Arabia.

Background: Primary care physicians play an essential role in the health of older adults as they are frequently the first point of contact. Their positive attitude and knowledge influence the quality of care provided to patients with dementia and their caregivers. This study examined the attitudes of primary care physicians towards dementia care and their confidence in their own dementia-care skills.

The Association Between Vitamin D Deficiency and the Level of Fasting C Peptide Among Patients With Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

This study investigates the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) indicated by elevated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, alongside assessing the association between fasting C peptide levels and uncontrolled T2DM, considering their roles in β-cell function and insulin secretion. The study employs a cohort design, selecting individuals diagnosed with T2DM aged 18 years or older with baseline data on vitamin D, fasting C peptide, and HbA1c. Data were collected through electronic medical records and follow-up assessments at regular intervals.

Impact of electronic health services on patient satisfaction in primary health care centers in Southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Background: Electronic health service (EHS) offers computerized medical knowledge, electronic patients' information, and telecommunications. The field of EHS has grown exponentially in the last decade, especially during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic; therefore, it is important to evaluate its impact on patient satisfaction.

Study Aim: To evaluate the effect of EHS on patient satisfaction at the primary care centers (PHCCs) in Abha, southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Soft and energy drinks consumption and associated factors in Saudi adults: a national cross-sectional study.

Introduction: The consumption of soft and energy drinks poses a significant risk for non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Studies in Saudi Arabia have reported elevated consumption of soft/energy drinks, but nation-wide data is not available. Therefore, this study aims to explore the prevalence of soft and energy drinks consumption and its associated factors among a representative sample of Saudi adults.

Unusual presentation of tractional retinal detachment in beta thalassemia minor.

Purpose: To report a case of proliferative retinopathy with tractional retinal detachment associated with beta thalassemia minor in a 27-year-old female.

Observations: A young lady having beta thalassemia minor presented with decreased vision in both eyes, the effect being more severe in her right eye. The patient's other systemic history, including ophthalmic history, was unremarkable.

Utility of the 4C ISARIC mortality score in hospitalized COVID-19 patients at a large tertiary Saudi Arabian center.

Background: The International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infections Consortium (ISARIC) 4C mortality score has been used before as a valuable tool for predicting mortality in COVID-19 patients. We aimed to address the utility of the 4C score in a well-defined Saudi population with COVID-19 admitted to a large tertiary referral hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted that included all adults COVID19 patients admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region (AFHSR), between January 2021 and September 2022.

Impact of viral co-infection on clinical outcomes and mortality of COVID-19 patients: a study from Saudi Arabia.

Background: In COVID-19 patients undetected co-infections may have severe clinical implications associated with prolonged hospitalization, ICU admission, and mortality. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of viral coinfections on the outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in a large tertiary Saudi Arabian Hospital.

Methods: A total of 178 adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 who were hospitalized at the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region (AFHSR), Saudi Arabia, from March 1 to June 30 2022, were enrolled.

The Outcome of COVID-19 Infection on Kidney Transplantation Recipients in Southern Saudi Arabia: Single-Center Experience.

Background: To report the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of severe COVID-19 disease in kidney transplant recipients attending a Saudi hospital at a single center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Methods: A retrospective chart-based cohort study involving all kidney transplant recipients tested for COVID-19 in the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region, KSA.

Results: Of 532 kidney transplant recipients who reported to the center, from March 2020 to June 2022, 180 were tested for COVID-19.

Parental Willingness for COVID-19 Vaccination among Children Aged 5 to 11 Years in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

To manage the COVID-19 outbreak, the WHO recommends adult and child vaccination. Vaccine skepticism has been a major worldwide health concern for decades, and the situation is worsening. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate parental willingness to vaccinate their children (aged 5 to 11 years) against COVID-19 and to describe its relationship with attitude, barriers, facilitators, and sources of knowledge regarding the vaccine.

Food Taste, Dietary Consumption, and Food Preference Perception of Changes Following Bariatric Surgery in the Saudi Population: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Bariatric surgery is known as the most effective treatment resulting in long-term weight loss for obesity. However, behavioral changes, including food preference, food allergies, and consumption, between groups of patients who underwent bariatric surgery in comparison with people who did not have bariatric surgery have not been fully discussed in the literature.

Objective: The aim of this article is to describe patient-reported changes of perception related to food preferences, consumption, and food allergies in participants who underwent bariatric surgery and to compare their food consumption with participants who did not have bariatric surgery in Saudi Arabia.

Exploring Weight Stigma in Saudi Arabia: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Weight stigma (WS) in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, is widely ignored. People with obesity are blamed for their weight, and there is a common perception that weight stigmatization is justifiable and may motivate individuals to adopt healthier behaviors. The authors of this study aimed to explore WS prevalence and factors associated with WS in a large nationwide study of Saudi Arabian adults.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen Administration Among Caregivers of the Pediatric Age Group in Jeddah.

Background Fever is one of the most common pediatric conditions usually managed by parents and the cause of nearly all pediatrician visits. However, many parents find the management of childhood fever and febrile diseases challenging owing to a lack of understanding of the nature, effects, and therapies of fever management. Objectives This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of paracetamol and ibuprofen administration among caregivers of the pediatric age group.

High-risk features in primary versus secondary enucleated globes with advanced retinoblastoma: a retrospective histopathological study.

Purpose: The management of bilateral advanced retinoblastoma (RB) cases is challenging with attempts to use neoadjuvant therapy salvaging of one of the globes. Our aim in this study was to demonstrate the effect of this primary therapy on the histopathological features and risk factors in secondary enucleated compared to primarily enucleated globes with groups D and E RB.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all enucleated globes with advanced RB received in the pathology laboratories over a period of 5 years.
