Microorganisms play a critical role in the process of nitrogen removal in aquatic environment, which is regulated by multiple environmental factors. As a high-altitude region, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has unique composition of bacterial communities due to its unique geographical conditions, which may affect the nitrogen conversion of Plateau rivers. However, the regulation of nitrogen removal by environmental factors and bacterial community in high-altitude rivers has been rarely reported.

The increasing human presence is having an impact on plateau ecosystems, but the special environment and lack of data make it difficult to assess the real ecological risks of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the river of plateau. The occurrence, distribution and trophic transfer of nineteen PPCPs were investigated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River on the Tibetan Plateau. All the targeted PPCPs were detected in filtrated water, and seventeen PPCPs were detected in the colloid, sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM).

The nitrogen pollution of rivers as a global environmental problem has received great attentions in recent years. The occurrence of emerging pollutants in high-altitude rivers will inevitably affect the dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes. In this study, sediment slurry experiments combined with N tracer techniques were conducted to investigate the influence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (alone and in combination) on denitrification and the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process and the resulting NO release in the sediments of the Yarlung Zangbo River.
