Smoke-free legislation has been shown to positively impact reducing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, especially in countries that have implemented comprehensive legislation rather than partial bans. Also, secondhand aerosols (SHA) that come from the heating of tobacco or liquids, with or without nicotine, in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have been proven to increase levels of harmful substances in the air. Therefore, protection against SHS and SHA exposure and expansion of smoke- and aerosol-free environments (SAFE) should be taken into account when creating or trying to expand or enforce clean air policies.

Mammalian decomposition provides pulses of organic matter to the local ecosystem creating ephemeral hotspots of nutrient cycling. While changes to soil biogeochemistry in these hotspots have been described for C and N, patterns associated with deposition and cycling of other elements have not received the same attention. The goal of our study was to evaluate temporal changes to a broad suite of dissolved elements in soils impacted by human decomposition on the soil surface including: 1) abundant mineral elements in the human body (K, Na, S, P, Ca, and Mg), 2) trace elements in the human body (Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, Cu, Co, and B), and 3) Al which is transient in the human body but common in soils.

The supramolecular assembly of DNA conjugates, functionalized with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) sticky ends, into vesicular structures is described. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active TPE units allow monitoring the assembly process by fluorescence spectroscopy. The number of TPE modifications in the overhangs of the conjugates influences the supramolecular assembly behavior.

During diffusion of nanoparticles bound to a cellular membrane by ligand-receptor pairs, the distance to the laterally mobile interface is sufficiently short for their motion to depend not only on the membrane-mediated diffusivity of the tethers but also in a not yet fully understood manner on nanoparticle size and interfacial hydrodynamics. By quantifying diffusivity, velocity, and size of individual membrane-bound liposomes subjected to a hydrodynamic shear flow, we have successfully separated the diffusivity contributions from particle size and number of tethers. The obtained diffusion-size relations for synthetic and extracellular lipid vesicles are not well-described by the conventional no-slip boundary condition, suggesting partial slip as well as a significant diffusivity dependence on the distance to the lipid bilayer.

The highly variable characteristics of waste activated sludge (WAS) hinder the comparison of experimental results on WAS bioconversion between the different studies that use excess sludge from different origin. Sludge grown under laboratory conditions with synthetic wastewater as feed showed high resistance to commonly applied pre-treatment techniques, such as thermal pre-treatment. However, a distinctly higher bioconversion of this sludge was recorded compared to WAS from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

The objectives of this study were to report 10 episodes of clinically significant bacteremia caused by species of the genus Anaerococcus isolated between July 2018 and February 2021 from the microbiology laboratory of a tertiary hospital in Granada (Spain). None of the isolates were identified by MALDI-TOF MS, and the definitive species identification was performed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. No reference spectra of the Anaerococcus species were present in the MALDI-TOF MS database.

The melting transition of Li-DNA fibers immersed in ethanol-water solutions has been studied using calorimetry and neutron diffraction techniques. The data have been analyzed using the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois model to determine the strengths of the intra- and inter-base pair potentials. The data and analysis show that the potentials are weaker than those for DNA in water.
