Ovarian cancer is a highly prevalent malignancy among women and affects a significant population worldwide. Different forms of hormonal treatments or chemotherapies are used to treat ovarian cancer, but the possible side effects, including menopausal symptoms, can be severe, forcing some patients to prematurely stop the treatment. The emerging genome editing technology, known as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-caspase 9 (Cas9), has the potential to treat ovarian cancer via gene editing strategies.

Many people hope that the unused and unwanted eggs frozen by women for self-use could be applied to reduce the shortage of donor eggs. However, several practical (additional screening and counselling) and ethical (informed consent and reimbursement) issues may dampen this hope. This paper also considers the question of whether elective egg freezers who want to donate their eggs should be reimbursed for the costs they have met for the IVF cycle and storage.

RENEB Inter-Laboratory Comparison 2021: The Cytokinesis-Block Micronucleus Assay.

The goal of the RENEB inter-laboratory comparison 2021 exercise was to simulate a large-scale radiation accident involving a network of biodosimetry labs. Labs were required to perform their analyses using different biodosimetric assays in triage mode scoring and to rapidly report estimated radiation doses to the organizing institution. After large-scale radiation accidents where many individuals are suspected to be exposed to ionizing radiation, biological and physical retrospective dosimetry assays are important tools to aid clinical decision making by categorizing individuals into unexposed/minimally, moderately or highly exposed groups. Quality-controlled inter-laboratory comparisons of simulated accident scenarios are regularly performed in the frame of the European legal association RENEB (Running the European Network of Biological and Physical retrospective Dosimetry) to optimize international networking and emergency readiness in case of large-scale radiation events. In total 33 laboratories from 22 countries around the world participated in the current RENEB inter-laboratory comparison 2021 for the dicentric chromosome assay.

How statistically non-significant results are reported and interpreted following null hypothesis significance testing is often criticized. This issue is important for animal cognition research because studies in the field are often underpowered to detect theoretically meaningful effect sizes, , often produce non-significant -values even when the null hypothesis is incorrect. Thus, we manually extracted and classified how researchers report and interpret non-significant -values and examined the -value distribution of these non-significant results across published articles in animal cognition and related fields.

The halogen bond complexes CF3X⋯Y and C2F3X⋯Y, with Y = furan, thiophene, selenophene and X = Cl, Br, I, have been studied by using DFT and CCSD(T) in order to understand which factors govern the interaction between the halogen atom X and the aromatic ring. We found that PBE0-dDsC/QZ4P gives an adequate description of the interaction energies in these complexes, compared to CCSD(T) and experimental results. The interaction between the halogen atom X and the π-bonds in perpendicular orientation is stronger than the interaction with the in-plane lone pairs of the heteroatom of the aromatic cycle.

Objectives: Salivary gland lymphocytic infiltrates are a hallmark of primary SS (pSS), but traditional biopsy techniques hold several disadvantages. Ultrasound-guided core needle (US-guided CN) parotid gland biopsy is minimally invasive and reliable for diagnosis of lymphoma in pSS. This proof-of-concept study aimed to explore this technique in the diagnostic work-up of pSS and is the first to address its value in a consecutive cohort independently of the presence of salivary gland swelling.

At the turn of the century, both academics and practitioners anticipated the Europeanization of national politics and political parties. One major expectation was that parties would adapt their organisation and behaviour to the existence of the EU and the functioning of its institutions. However, the early 2000s poured cold water on those expectations: the slacking politicization of EU affairs, it was concluded, created few incentives for parties to adapt, and so there was no meaningful Europeanization to speak of.

Dietary fiber is considered an essential constituent of a healthy child's diet. Diets of healthy children with adequate dietary fiber intake are characterized by a higher diet quality, a higher nutrient density, and a higher intake of vitamins and minerals in comparison to the diets of children with poor dietary fiber intake. Connexin proteins can form hexameric hemichannels and gap junctions that mediate paracrine and direct intercellular communication, respectively. Gap junction activity is crucial for the maintenance of hepatic homeostasis, while connexin hemichannels become particularly active in liver disease, such as hepatitis, fibrosis, cholestasis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. Channels consisting of connexin-like proteins named pannexins have been directly linked to liver inflammation and cell death.

Traditionally, our understanding of how proteins operate and how evolution shapes them is based on two main data sources: the overall protein fold and the protein amino acid sequence. However, a significant part of the proteome shows highly dynamic and/or structurally ambiguous behavior, which cannot be correctly represented by the traditional fixed set of static coordinates.
