Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory virus with a significant impact, particularly on the paediatric population, yet it remains an under-recognized contributor to respiratory infections globally. Recent epidemics in China, India and Europe underscore its clinical burden, with severe cases linked to bronchiolitis, pneumonia and exacerbations of chronic conditions. Despite its impact, hMPV remains underdiagnosed due to limited access to molecular diagnostics and routine surveillance, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Objectives: This research aimed to investigate the potential of Benth's ethanolic extract (PCEE) as an antiaging agent.

Methods: We treated 3T3-L1 cells induced by doxorubicin with PCEE and assessed them with antiaging markers such as gene and telomere length with polymerase chain reaction (PCR), or reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation with 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFHDA).

Results: This study demonstrates that PCEE can inhibit ROS accumulation, decrease the expression level of the senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) and maintain telomere length in doxorubicin-induced 3T3-L1 cells.

Background: Given their crucial role in vaccine assessment, National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) should be considered in the Regulation on Health Technology Assessment (EU HTAR) to maximize the benefits of the EU HTAR for vaccines. This review and perspective piece identifies the gaps arising from NITAGs potential lack of involvement and proposes strategies for involving them.

Methods: A targeted literature and guideline review was conducted to evaluate NITAGs' current and future role in relation to the EU HTAR.

The effects of YAP/TAZ in cardiomyocytes: a scoping review.

Mol Biol Rep

April 2025

Physiology Molecular, Biological Activity Division, Central Laboratory, Sumedang, West Java, 45363, Indonesia.

The Hippo signaling pathway, through its effectors' yes-associated protein (YAP) and transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), plays a pivotal role in heart development, regeneration, and repair. Despite the well-recognized role of YAP in promoting cardiomyocyte proliferation and differentiation, the underlying mechanisms require further explanation. Therefore, this scoping review was conducted to explore the underlying mechanisms of YAP and TAZ in cardiomyocyte biology.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyrotoxicosis is linked to cardiovascular issues and may lead to conditions like tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and mitral regurgitation (MR), though research on these specific heart problems is still limited.
  • A systematic review analyzed 57 case reports of 62 predominantly female patients (average age 45.77 years) with thyrotoxicosis, revealing improvements in heart conditions like TR, MR, heart failure (HF), and pulmonary hypertension (PH) after treatment.
  • The study concludes that treating hyperthyroidism can lead to significant clinical recovery in heart issues within six months, driven by both direct effects of thyroid hormones and other related factors.

Background: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), a neglected tropical disease, has been speculated to be complicated by secondary bacteria, yet a systematic documentation of these bacterial populations is lacking. Thus, the primary focus of this study was to profile bacteria diversity in the progression of filarial lymphedema among LF individuals with or without wounds.

Methods: A cross-sectional study design recruited 132 LF individuals presenting with lymphedema with or without wounds from eight communities in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region, Ghana.

Potential Role of Exercise in Regulating YAP and TAZ During Cardiomyocytes Aging.

Curr Cardiol Rev

September 2022

Physiology Molecular, Biological Activity Division, Central Laboratory, Bandung, Indonesia.

Adaptation of cardiac muscle to regular exercise results in morphological and structural changes known as physiological cardiac hypertrophy, to which the Hippo signaling pathway might have contributed. Two major terminal effectors in the Hippo signaling pathway are Yes-associated protein (YAP) and its homolog transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ). The latest studies have reported the role of YAP and TAZ in different life stages, such as in fetal, neonatal, and adult hearts.
