Acute aortic dissection (AAD) can be said to be a relatively uncommon emergency with fatal outcomes mainly due to delayed/missed diagnosis and treatment. Its ability to masquerade as other emergencies like acute coronary syndrome and pulmonary embolism makes the prognosis unfavorable in a significant proportion of patients. Patients have been seen to present to the accident and emergency department or outpatient setting with typical or atypical symptoms as we will discuss in this article.

Background: Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in sports are frequent in children and young adults participating in sporting activities involving rotational and pivoting movements. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most accurate diagnostic tool to detect an ACL tear. There are, however, a number of specialized tests available to assess ACL competency.

Using the Superfolder GFP (sfGFP) System to Study Plant Peroxisomal Protein Import.

Methods Mol Biol

March 2023

Centre for Plant Sciences and School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK.

The fusing of a protein of interest to a fluorescent protein followed by fluorescence microscopy is a very common method of determining protein localization and dynamics. However even small fluorescent proteins can be large enough to affect protein folding and localization, therefore the ability to use a smaller tag but still be able to detect a fluorescent signal in live cell imaging experiments is extremely valuable. The self-assembling split sfGFP system allows the fusion of the protein of interest with the 11th β-strand of super-folder GFP (sfGFP11) which is only 13 amino acids long.

PLoS One

March 2023

Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine, School of Medicine, The University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2017, gastric cancer was one of the most diagnosed cancers in Jordan, primarily linked to the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, yet the general population's awareness of its risks is unclear.
  • A study conducted in 2021 with 933 participants revealed that while 63% had a high level of education, 70.5% obtained information about H. pylori from non-medical sources and 68.7% demonstrated low knowledge of the infection.
  • Findings indicated that knowledge was significantly higher for those with medical ties or who consulted medical resources, highlighting the need for better public awareness and credible information sources on H. pylori in Jordan.

Specifying a cascade water demand forecasting model using time-series analysis: a case of Jordan.

Sustain Water Resour Manag

January 2023

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mu'tah University, Karak, Jordan.

This study aims to develop a model for forecasting water demand for 2021-2030 to examine water availability for municipality uses in the Al-Balqa governorate of Jordan. The method was developed using a time series analysis of historical data from 1990-2010, which comprised yearly and monthly water consumption and socioeconomic factors, including population, income, and climate factors, such as average precipitation and temperatures. The analysis of historical data was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.

Despite optimal medical treatment, many individuals suffering from severe coronary artery disease are not suitable candidates for further revascularization. Therapeutic angiogenesis has attracted continuous interest to increase myocardial perfusion. Cell therapy using autologous stem cells expressing Cluster of Differentiation 34 plus (CD34+) offers a special therapeutic choice for individuals with refractory angina, seeing as CD34+ stem cells can restore microcirculation.

What Dietary Patterns and Nutrients are Associated with Pancreatic Cancer? Literature Review.

Cancer Manag Res

January 2023

Department of Human Nutrition, College of Health Sciences, QU Health, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar.

This narrative review summarizes the main findings of observational studies (case-control and cohort) as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the role of nutrients and dietary patterns on pancreatic cancer (PC) risk and elucidates possible mechanisms for the association between nutrients or specific food components and the risk of PC. A literature search of MEDLINE (PubMed), Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus was performed. An extensive search of related articles published in the English language from 1985 to 2022 was carried out.

Despite the widespread use of lipid-lowering agents such as statins, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Icosapent ethyl (IPE) (Vascepa), an ethyl ester of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), has gained widespread popularity as an adjunctive agent that targets multiple and additional mechanisms linked to the incidence of cardiovascular (CV) events and the causative pathway of atherosclerosis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 standards were used to conduct this systematic review.

Objectives: Pancreatic cancer (PC) has been related directly to many risk factors; however, diet is considered one of the most modifiable risk factors. This study is designed to observe the associations between the intake of macromicronutrients and the risk of pancreatic cancer in a Jordanian population.

Methods: A case-control study included 100 patients with the incident and histologically confirmed PC and 309 control subjects frequency-matched on age, educational level, occupation, and marital status.

Elderly patients with acute cholecystitis (AC) often receive no surgical treatment due to a high number of comorbidities and a high risk of operations. With an increasingly aged population worldwide, this systematic review aims to review the safety of minimally invasive cholecystectomy and open cholecystectomy in this population compared to younger patients. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar databases on July 2, 2022.

Background: In patients with Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), soiling may be related to anal sphincter damage following the initial pull-through. No optimal treatment has been developed for such patients, although enemas (rectal or antegrade) have been applied with some success. We present the one-year outcomes of a new technique for anal sphincter reconstruction.

Introduction: Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. Lockdown was a chosen strategy to deal with the spread of infectious diseases; nonetheless, it influenced people's eating and smoking behaviors. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on smoking (waterpipe and cigarette) behavior and its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and body mass index.

Zirconium porous clay heterostructures (Zr-PCH) were synthesized using intercalated clay minerals by zirconium species with different contents of zirconium. The presence of zirconium and silica species was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. The insertion of zirconium improved the thermal stability, the specific surface area with a maximum of 950 m/g, and the acidity concentration of 0.

Production of medium-sized chitosan oligomers using molecular sieves and their antibacterial activity.

Carbohydr Polym

November 2022

Department of Biological Sciences, College of Sciences, Mu'tah University, Al-Karak, Jordan. Electronic address:

Chitosan, derived from the natural polysaccharide chitin, was fragmented in very dilute acetic acid solutions using zeolites and molecular sieves, a type of zeolites, under variable reaction conditions of temperature, acid concentration, duration of reaction, and zeolites of variable pore sizes. Fragmentation resulted in the formation of appreciable amounts of chitosan oligomers comprised of 4-8 units, which were studied by using LC-MS, MS, as well as IR spectroscopy. The prepared fragments were tested for their biological activity and some of them showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria.

Cloaca is a rare, complex malformation encompassing the genitourinary and anorectal tract of the female in which these tracts fail to separate in utero, resulting in a single perineal orifice. Prenatal sonography detects a few cases with findings such as renal and urinary tract malformations, intraluminal calcifications, dilated bowel, ambiguous genitalia, a cystic pelvic mass, or identification of other associated anomalies prompting further imaging. Multi-disciplinary collaboration between neonatology, pediatric surgery, urology, and gynecology is paramount to achieving safe outcomes.
