The role of the respiratory bacterial microbiota in the pathogenesis of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is still not well defined, limiting our understanding of the disease. Specifically, there is no information on the nasopharyngeal bacterial microbiota of cattle raised without antimicrobials. Lameness in cattle is a health and welfare concern; however, limited information is available on risk factors and the relationship between lameness and common diseases like bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: 1) identify prevalence of lameness in feedlot cattle and related risk factors of cattle diagnosed as lame; and 2) determine associations between BRD occurrence and lameness. The composition of the nasopharyngeal bacterial microbiota has been shown to play a role in cattle respiratory health. However, previous studies are narrow in scope regarding longitudinal observations, limiting our understanding of how respiratory bacteria evolve over time. The objective was therefore to characterize this microbiota and its evolution over time in beef calves.

Sustainability of animal agriculture requires efficient use of energy and nitrogen (N) by ruminants fed high-forage diets. Thus, there is a need to decrease methane (CH4) emissions and prevent excessive N release into the environment. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of pretreating dairy cow rations with a fibrolytic enzyme derived from Trichoderma reesei (FETR; mixture of xylanase and cellulase; AB Vista, Wiltshire, UK) on lactation performance, digestibility, and feeding behavior in response to feeding a barley silage-based diet. Before starting the dairy trial, in vitro incubations were conducted to determine whether the addition of FETR would have an effect on these animal performance characteristics when applied to a barley silage-based diet for dairy cows. The dairy trial was performed using 8 Holstein dairy cows.

The study objective was to evaluate the combined effects of supplementing monensin (MON) and the methane (CH4) inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (NOP) on enteric CH4 emissions, growth rate, and feed conversion efficiency of backgrounding and finishing beef cattle. Two hundred and forty crossbred steers were used in a 238-d feeding study and fed a backgrounding diet for the first 105 d (backgrounding phase), transition diets for 28 d, followed by a finishing diet for 105 d (finishing phase). Treatments were as follows: 1) control (no additive); 2) MON (monensin supplemented at 33 mg/kg DM; 3) NOP (3-nitrooxypropanol supplemented at 200 mg/kg DM for backgrounding or 125 mg/kg DM for finishing phase); and 4) MONOP (33 mg/kg DM MON supplemented with either 200 mg/kg DM or 125 mg/kg DM NOP).

Lameness is an important health issue in feedlot cattle; however, there is a paucity of information regarding its economic impact. Decision tree models are excellent tools for assessing costs of disease such as the net return (net return = benefit - cost). Models were developed using expert opinion, literature and retrospective feedlot data provided by Vet-Agri Health Services (VAHS, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada) collected from 2005 to 2015 on individually treated cattle ( = 30,940) from 28 feedlots.

Aims: To characterize the changes in the relative population size (RPS) of select ruminal bacteria and rumen fermentation variables in beef heifers supplemented with a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as viable active dried (ADY) or killed dried (KDY) yeast following an induced episode of ruminal acidosis.
Methods And Results: Six ruminally cannulated beef heifers fed a diet consisting of 50% forage and 50% grain (dry matter basis) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with three 28-day periods. Treatments were: (i) control (CTRL; no yeast); (ii) ADY (4 g day providing 10 CFU per g; AB Vista, UK); and (iii) KDY (4 g day autoclaved ADY).
