Bisphenol analogues and phthalate acid esters are well-known endocrine disruptors. Information on detailed distribution and partitioning of Bisphenol A (BPA) and Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in port sediments is essential for a better understanding of their residence time in sediment, influence of anthropogenic activities in port, and port sustainability, especially in terms of environmental impact. Herein, this study determined the concentrations of BPA and PAEs in sediments that are collected from 38 stations from Istanbul ship-ports and scrutinized distribution, possible source identification and potential environmental risk assessment.

The polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) are worldwide contaminants, and they tend to accumulate in wide variety of matrices. Therefore, due to the highest accumulation rate and recalcitrancy, their precise quantification makes significant concern about their toxicological effects on both humans and organisms. The objective of the study is that using hydrogen carrier gas instead of helium in gas chromatography with triple quadrupole (GC-MS/MS) systems could contribute to improvements on the analysis of dl-PCBs and PCDD/Fs in environmental matrices.

This paper presents an evaluation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) outflows during the destruction of HBCD waste stockpiles in IZAYDAS Hazardous Waste Incinerator (HWI) in Kocaeli, Türkiye. HBCD wastes containing 100 % pure HBCD were in 25 kg packages with 63 % Br content were co-incinerated in a 3-day test burn with average feed rate of 26 kg/h. HBCD, PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs were measured in the outlet streams to quantify the amount of unintended POPs releases associated with the processing of HBCD waste and to observe the POP removal performance of air pollution control equipment (APCE) of the incinerator.

In this study, we used a comprehensive array of sampling techniques to examine the pollution caused by organic micropollutants in İzmit Bay for the first time. Our methodology contains spot seawater sampling, semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) passive samplers for time-weighted average (TWA), and sediment sampling for long-term pollution detection in İzmit Bay, together. Additionally, the analysis results obtained with these three sampling methods were compared in this study.

In this study, heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, V) and Pb analyses have been performed in the marine biota (scaldfish, sea lettuce, crab). Samples were collected from 5 different parts of the Marmara Sea and Western Black Sea in January 2020. The results indicated that the highest Cu and Zn content was found in algae samples, but it was observed that heavy metal concentrations such as Co, Cu, Cd and V were generally low and under permissible limit.

The identification and quantification of ascorbic acid, phenolic acids and flavonoids were carried out simultaneously with a rapid method of reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Total flavonoid contents were being determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and total phenolic contents were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry using the Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) method. In all of the individual contents and total phenolic content analysis, the best results were obtained with the methanol-water solvent system.

Geochemical and sedimentological analyses and radionuclide (Pb and Cs) dating of three cores from the Bosporus outlet area of the Black Sea, north of Istanbul, were conducted to assess the sources and history of heavy metal pollution. The sedimentary succession in the shelf core KD12-01 consists mainly of clay (49-80%) and silt (15-41%). Radionuclide dating of the core indicates that it consists of old sediments that are uncontaminated with heavy metals.

This study was implemented to investigate the species composition, abundance, seasonal variations and diversity of epipelic algae, to determine environmental variables affecting them and to reveal the accumulation of total organic carbon in the sediment in the coastal zone of the Istanbul Strait, Turkey. Epipelic algal community consisted of 44 taxa with a low diversity. The sediment structure which is highly unstable due to the high hydrodynamism of the zone played a dominant role as the main factor in the epipelic algal flora along the coasts of Istanbul Strait.
