Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of long-term central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) among hospitalized adults with cancer in Italy and compare the characteristics of patients who required long-term central venous access device (LCVAD) substitution due to prior CLABSI with those who had never experienced CLABSI.
Methods: The study was conducted in hospitals across northern and central Italy using a multicenter, observational, cross-sectional design from March to September 2021. A total of 174 adults with cancer were included.
Purpose: The aim of this systematic review is to analyze and provide an overview of the indications, contraindications and the clinical outcomes to bi-unicondylar knee arthroplasty (Bi-UKA).
Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted to identify original studies written in English reporting indication criteria or clinical outcomes on Bi-UKA) performed simultaneously or at two different stages. Studies reporting patellofemoral implants with medial or lateral implants, ex-vivo or cadaveric studies were excluded.

In recent years, it was recognized that type-2 inflammation connects nasal polyposis and severe asthma (SA) in addition to other type-2 diseases. Thus, some biological drugs developed for SA appeared to exert a favourable effect also in nasal polyposis. So far, there are several trials supporting this concept; therefore, some monoclonal antibodies already used for SA were assessed also in chronic rhinosinusistis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP), with promising results.

Purpose: Orthobiologics gained popularity for the treatment of musculoskeletal pathologies, including osteoarthritis (OA). Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) were reported to reduce OA symptoms, contributing to the restoration of joint homoeostasis. Variability in production protocols and lack of extensive characterisation hinder a clear indication for the choice of a product over the other.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial for intercellular communication and are found in various biological fluids. The identification and immunophenotyping of such small particles continue to pose significant challenges. Here, we have developed a workflow for the optimisation of a next-generation panel for in-depth immunophenotyping of circulating plasma EVs using spectral flow cytometry.

Background: Following the results of the MANDARA trial, this real-life study aimed at comparing the effectiveness and safety profile of mepolizumab versus benralizumab in a European EGPA cohort.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational comparative study including EGPA patients, who received mepolizumab or benralizumab at the asthma dose. Patients were matched 1:1 by sex, age, BVAS and oral corticosteroid (OCS) dosage at the treatment initiation (T0).

Background: Bypass surgery using saphenous vein (SV) grafts is commonly performed to revascularize the ischemic heart and lower limbs. These interventions have limited success due to adverse remodeling caused by overproliferation of smooth muscle cells in the intima layer, leading to progressive bypass stenosis. We previously showed that cyclic strain deriving from exposure to coronary flow induces the expression of the matricellular protein thrombospondin-1 in the human SV, promoting activation of progenitor cells normally residing in the adventitia.

Genetic factors, particularly germline pathogenic variants (PVs) in DNA repair genes (DRGs), play a crucial role in PCa predisposition. Our study aimed to assess patients' adherence to a targeted PCa screening program targeting high-risk individuals with DRG PVs and evaluate the potential reduction in biopsy and MRI rates by employing our screening protocol.

Background: Prenatal factors have been implicated in the likelihood of reporting sleep disorders in infants. The influence of prenatal and pregnancy-related factors on the incidence of brief resolved unexplained events (BRUEs) in infants has not been established.
Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the prenatal and pregnancy-related factors that may contribute to the development of BRUEs in infants.

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) applied with standard chemotherapy have been approved for the first-line treatment of unresectable pleural mesothelioma (PM), an aggressive malignancy with limited effective therapy options. In this study, we demonstrated that the simultaneous exposure to TTFields and doxorubicin or vinorelbine enhanced treatment efficacy in patient-derived PM cells by increasing intracellular drug concentrations. This was achieved by modulating several genes that encode transport proteins, such as the downregulation of P-glycoprotein (P-gp).

Background: In an Italian cohort of lupus podocytopathy patients, we aimed to characterize the presenting features, therapy, and outcomes, and explore differences between relapsing and non-relapsing patients.
Methods: We identified 29 patients with lupus podocytopathy from 1994 to 2023 in 11 Italian Nephrology/Rheumatology Units, and divided them into two groups: relapsing and non-relapsing. Given the limited sample size, a p-value ≤ 0.

Tregs for adoptive therapy are traditionally expanded ex vivo using high doses of IL-2. However, the final Treg product has limited survival once infused in patients, potentially affecting therapeutic effectiveness. Here, we tested a novel expansion protocol in which highly purified naïve Tregs were expanded with a combination of IL-7 and IL-15, in the absence of IL-2.

Our aim was to evaluate the safety and clinical outcomes of an arthroscopic debridement followed by a single injection of micro-fragmented adipose tissue in patients affected by knee OA.
Methods: From 2016 to 2020, patients affected by knee OA were enroled.
Purpose: Despite advances in surgical techniques and rehabilitation protocols, arthrofibrosis following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) still has poor outcomes. In the last decade, attention has been focused on the pathogenesis and cascade of events leading to the development of fibrosis. Currently, one of the most promising approaches consists in the indirect antagonisation of transforming growth factor beta 1 () through the downregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: The incidence of both primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is expected to rise, making early recognition of TKA failure crucial to prevent extensive revision surgeries. This study aims to develop a deep learning (DL) model to predict TKA failure using radiographic images.
Methods: Two patient cohorts who underwent primary TKA were retrospectively collected: one was used for the model development and the other for the external validation.
