The Earth's magnetic field undergoes slow diurnal variations, yet their potential role as environmental cues influencing biological rhythms remains poorly understood. This study examines whether such geomagnetic fluctuations can entrain locomotor activity rhythms in the blind Mexican cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus), a species with reduced circadian regulation due to life in perpetual darkness. The European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a fish species that can be a planktivorous, benthivorous and carnivorous at different life stages. Using the example of the perch population from White Lake (Northwest Russia) the connection between ontogenetic change of diet and mercury accumulation in fish muscle tissue is shown. Analysis of the gut contents of 223 perch indicated that the main food item of perch aged 4-6+ years is the lake form of European smelt (80-100%).

The family Hybotidae (Insecta: Diptera, Empidoidea) is recorded for the first time from the bio-inclusions of Sakhalinian amber (Russia). Almost all inclusions studied belong to the subfamily Tachydromiinae. First results suggest that tachydromiines were not uncommon in a palaeo-biotope, where a resin known nowadays as Sakhalinian amber was produced.

Based on a critical review of the literature and study of the authors' own collections, a survey of cave spiders of the Crimean Mountains has been conducted, resulting in 20 reliable species records in eight families. Nine species have been discovered in the Crimean caves for the first time, of which two are described as new to science. A classification of spiders by ecological groups depending on their cave lifestyle is provided; a troglomorphic spider is found and described from Crimea for the first time.
