Introduction: Emergent carotid artery stenting (eCAS) is frequently performed in acute ischemic stroke to restore cerebral perfusion in patients with high-grade carotid stenosis or dissection. In the absence of prior dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), these procedures carry a heightened risk of acute in-stent thrombosis. Tirofiban, an intravenous glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor with rapid onset of action, has been proposed as a bridging antiplatelet strategy, although its efficacy and safety in the neurovascular setting remain uncertain.

Thaumatin-Like Proteins (TLPs) play a crucial role against biotic and abiotic stresses, acting as signaling molecules in transduction pathways and exhibiting antimicrobial activity. The present study aimed to characterize TLPs of Cenostigma pyramidale (Fabaceae) and analyze their expression (RNA-Seq) in root tissues under salt stress. A total of 36 CpTLPs were identified, which showed the characteristic TLP domain and a signal peptide in the N-terminal region.

Background: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with many patients remaining symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy. Cardiac contractility modulation (CCM), which delivers non-excitatory electrical impulses during the refractory period, enhances myocardial contractility without increasing oxygen demand. This therapy targets symptomatic HFrEF patients with narrow QRS complexes who are ineligible for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).

Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine the anatomical and technical parameters for the installation of dental implants in the pterygomaxillary region.

Materials And Method: This is a cross-sectional imaging study. Twenty bilateral computed tomography scans (40 regions) were analyzed using the ImplantViewer program and subsequently tabulated in Microsoft Excel for statistical analysis in the GraphPad program with a 95% confidence level.

Unlabelled: This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of buprenorphine-naloxone compared to methadone in the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), with a focus on treatment retention, attrition rates, and serious adverse events. OUD remains a major public health concern, necessitating effective pharmacological interventions to improve adherence and minimize adverse outcomes. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus identified randomized controlled trials comparing both treatments.

Angioplasties using drug-eluting stents remain the most common and effective intervention for coronary artery disease. However, in-stent restenosis (ISR) continues to be the leading cause of stent failure following percutaneous coronary intervention, accounting for 5-10% of all clinical intervention procedures. This study aimed to investigate the potential molecular mechanisms involved in the development of in-stent restenosis.

Introduction: Surgery to remove lower third molars is usually associated with events such as pain, swelling and trismus, thus increasing postoperative morbidity. The control of these signs and symptoms is essential for a quick recovery of the patient.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine whether acupuncture is effective in controlling pain in lower third molar surgeries.

Background: Severe coronary artery calcification (CAC) remains a significant challenge in interventional cardiology, especially in elderly and comorbid patients, such as diabetes or chronic kidney disease. CAC often leads to complications such as stent thrombosis and restenosis, therefore leading to bad clinical outcomes and increased major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) rates. Traditional approaches, including rotational atherectomy (RA), are commonly used to treat calcified plaques; however, are limited by procedural complexity, length of procedures, and risk of vascular injury.

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce major cardiovascular events among individuals with heart failure regardless the ejection fraction. The effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and physical capacity are still unclear.

Aim: To investigate the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on HRQoL and physical capacity in patients with heart failure.

A significant portion of the population in low-income countries relies on medicinal plants for healthcare. Fava d'anta is an important species in Brazil due to its bioactive compounds like quercetin and rutin. These compounds have various pharmaceutical applications, but the sustainability of their exploitation is challenged by overharvesting, necessitating sustainable management practices and further biotechnological advancements.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of infectious diseases that mainly affect the population living in poverty and without basic sanitation, causing severe damage to countries' economies. Among them, Leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, sleeping sickness, and related diseases such as Malaria stand out, which, despite being well known, have limited treatments based on old drugs and have high rates of parasite resistance. In addition, current drugs have an uncertain mechanism of action, and there is a need to identify new mechanisms to overcome problems related to side effects and resistance.

Targeting cysteine protease B to discover antileishmanial drugs: Directions and advances.

Eur J Med Chem

May 2025

Cesmac University Center, Pharmacy Department, Maceió, Brazil; Postgraduate Program of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy Department, State University of Paraíba, Campina Grande, PB, Brazil; Laboratory of Synthesis and Drug Delivery, Department of Biological Sciences, State University of Paraiba, J

Leishmaniasis is a severe disease and results in high mortality rates. Despite this, there are few drugs to treat and with various limitations such as toxicity and resistance, which justifies the search for new drugs. Thus, cysteine protease B (CPB) is a promising target against leishmania due to its immunomodulatory function related to the parasite's virulence and its interaction with the host.

This letter to the editor provides a critical and constructive analysis of the article "Intravascular Lithotripsy Compared with Rotational Atherectomy for Calcified Coronary Lesions: A Meta-analysis of Outcomes", highlighting key methodological limitations and the exclusion of relevant contemporary studies. It emphasizes the clinical importance of addressing severely calcified coronary lesions, a significant challenge in interventional cardiology, and advocates for future research to prioritize randomized clinical trials, subgroup analyses, and cost-effectiveness evaluations to improve the applicability of findings across healthcare settings. By promoting dialogue within the scientific community and encouraging the integration of evolving data, the letter aims to refine clinical strategies and align them with evidence-based public health approaches, particularly in resource-limited environments.

Neonatal Clinical Assessment of the Puppy and Kitten: How to Identify Newborns at Risk?

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Veterinary Neonatology Research Group, Department of Veterinary Clinic, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University (UNESP), Botucatu 18618-970, SP, Brazil.

Neonatal puppies and kittens have physiological and anatomical characteristics that differ from those of adult animals, which impacts the interpretation of physical examination and complementary tests. The veterinarian must be familiar with the clinical, laboratory, and imaging aspects observed in neonates. It is necessary to thoroughly evaluate the litter and the mother to notice the most subtle signs of illness and advise the owner to constantly monitor the newborns, quickly sending them to specialized care.
